How useful is a "custom gpt" in writing

Essentially I want to compile all the details of my story, characters and world into one comprehensive document. I don’t really care how long.

I thought of two options being a bit familiar with the limitations of all the versions I’ve used so far:

  1. Feed All Background Info and then move onto the story: Input all the world-building, power systems, geography, characters, etc. into ChatGPT. However, I know this won’t be possible as stated due to the memory limits and ChatGPT forgetting details over time. As well as the fact that we’re talking about possibly 5 to 7 documents of an average of 20 pages and scattered notes saved everywhere. I thought maybe I could wipe the memory and then focus it’s memory on specific sections as needed, summarizing the information. But objectively speaking this is still very unrealistic.

  2. Section by Section: Start the story and work on one part at a time. Each section would have only the necessary context. Details such as details of important characters present, for instance instead of focusing on the overall magic system I’d then be focused on individual’s ability sets and their interactions, and I would move on to the next part, fully starting afresh, once I’m satisfied with the previous one. This will definitely take forever but given my experience with chatgpt so far this seems like the most feasible. As although I’ll have to repeat the same info so many times, it seems more possible.

And then I realized, I’ve never used the custom GPT option before, but it seems like it could help. I’m not sure how accurate or efficient it would be, or how much effort it requires. I’ve watched some YouTube videos but didn’t find clear answers. I’m basically hoping it can help me lead more towards option 1 for less stress on my part and a faster work time. But I don’t know because the custom ones I’ve seen seem far more focused on doing one specific task and not really doing this sort of thing, from what I’ve seen :man_shrugging:

So that’s the entire scenario. Would creating a custom GPT for this work or help in anyway? How much effort should I expect to put in, and how detailed should I be? Any tutorials or videos on this that I might have missed in my short search? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you if you even got this far🙇

PS:
Just a heads up. It’s almost 2am my time so I’m going to bed. I’ll reply to any help when I wake up. Just wanted to say so it doesn’t seem like I’m not appreciative. Thank you

For some reason I tried posting on the chatgpt reddit multiple times through both my account and my friends when mine didn’t work. I even made a new one with a spare email and same thing. All were deleted almost instantly. Anything I’m doing wrong?

I can only share my recent experience trying to write a product review assistant. I recently was invited to Amazon Vine and I wanted to make the review process easier for myself by having a custom GPT take in a link, screen shot of the product page, or a product description, and then go through an interview of standard questions as well as some questions tailored to the product, then take my free form answers and turn it into an edited, formatted review (TLDR section, Pros and Cons, and Detailed Review).

So far I’ve had a lot of frustrations with getting its instructions right or it actually following them. If I ask it to do what I want in the chat itself it gets it right, but if I front load the instructions it does not. For example I want it to give me the results in a markdown code block without markdown formatting, I just can’t copy and paste the text from the chat because it has rich text that doesn’t carry over well to the text only review boxes.

Interacting with the gpt that updates the instructions itself is kind of opaque. You can look at what the actual instructions end up being and manually edit them. I’ve found that there is some nuance lost when it translates what I want into instructions at times. If anything I think it might be useful to get a rough start with the GPT, and edit the instructions by hand and maybe ask ChatGPT to clean up the instructions in a normal GPT-4o chat.

For your purposes, I don’t really feel like the feature is there yet. I just don’t think it can reliably aggregate and organize that much information and the more constraints and conditions you put in the less likely it is to do anything particularly well.

That being said, I urge you to try it out for yourself. I think the exercise is worthwhile just for gaining insights into what it can and can’t do well. From it you may find it can provide you a tool that’s useful despite being less than your initial vision.

Ok thanks a lot for your reply, really appreciate it. I will try it out, but if you’re saying it won’t work I’d love for it to be more of a fun endeavor and nothing as stressful as what trying this with the compilation might look in my head.
Thanks again
