I’m a ChatGPT Plus subscriber and I use ChatGPT professionally for long, complex legal-psychological analysis.
For this kind of work I almost always use High Thinking, because the additional reasoning quality is extremely valuable to me.
However, I can’t find clear information about how High Thinking usage limits actually work.
Could someone clarify the following?
Are High Thinking limits based on messages, compute, or something else?
Are there any published limits for ChatGPT Plus?
Is there a way to see how much High Thinking usage remains?
If the limit is reached, does it reset after a few hours, after a day, or after a week?
Has anyone here actually reached the High Thinking limit while using ChatGPT professionally?
I’m not trying to reduce my usage—I actually want to rely on High Thinking for my work. I simply want to be able to plan large projects without worrying about unexpectedly losing access during an important analysis.
Adding to the document @EricGT linked here his great suggestion on checking your usages, the current documentation and OpenAI does not specify whether the High reasoning limit for ChatGPT Plus is calculated by messages, compute or something else. It also does not publish an exact numerical limit, document a way to view the remaining allowance or state a fixed reset period.
The documentation only says that ChatGPT displays when the allowance resets when that information is available. If the reasoning limit is reached, ChatGPT may continue using GPT‑5.4 Thinking mini.
So unfortunately, there does not currently appear to be enough published information to calculate or plan your remaining High usage precisely. Whether anyone here has actually reached the limit would need to be answered from personal experience.
@EricGT I think the Usage and limits applies for Codex, if you meant this?
Thank you for posting this question. I am a new member to this community and it was out of need to answer similar questions about usage. What i have found is ambiguity myself. I have not seen any actual hard numbers that tell you what you get for your plan. I have asked elsewhere as a comparison to going to a restaurant, you get a menu and it tells you exactly what you’re getting according to what you order. This is frustrating because it is costing me productivity and time to have to search out these answers. I only get circular answers that say it’s not me it’s then desktop app.
If anyone at openAI could help us find these numbers we are looking for, that would be fantastic and helpful. As of right now, I have started using another AI service that has proven to be a little more reliable. I would prefer using chatGPT, but until these bugs and usage issues are resolved I can’t justify the lost productivity and frustration.
I completely understand what you mean. My question also comes from a productivity perspective rather than simply wanting “more” usage.
I use ChatGPT professionally for long, complex projects, so knowing what my plan includes would help me plan my work with confidence.
I hope OpenAI will eventually provide more transparency about usage limits, as I think that would benefit many professional users.
Personally, I wouldn’t even ask for a smarter model. I would ask for more transparency and predictability.
For example, something as simple as:
High Thinking available: 84%
Estimated remaining High Thinking capacity: approximately 6 hours of intensive use
Next reset: tomorrow at 09:15
That would give professional users much more confidence when working on important projects.
I’m not worried about the price of my subscription. I’m worried about unexpectedly losing access to High Thinking in the middle of a large professional project. For me, reliability and predictability are far more important than having the lowest-priced plan.
