As I’ve been using 5.3 Codex even after 5.4 and 5.5 got released. I personally find it gives me the best outcome, for me even better experience than gpt 5.5. If expected, are we going to get any more codex models or going forward only generic gpt models only?
The same. gpt-5.3-codex is much better than the new models when it comes to the code and codebase understanding. gpt-5.5 is so mumbo jumbo, simply wasting the tokens and leaving me with such a mess that I have to revert all the cnages and start from scratch with gpt-5.3-codex
All this means Codex is unusable now. Please add the gpt-5.3-codex back
I certainly did not expect it. I think this takes the cake for the craziest AI company move (yet) that impacts my daily workflow. 5.5 is so much less efficient than 5.3 codex is. just taking it away, no notice, no nothing, no replacement so I gotta google whats going on with a subscription I pay for. wild.
If you look at the page that informs you whcih models are available on your subscribtion you will see Codex 5.3 listed. If you look into your emails you will see that OpenAI plans to deprecate all the cheaper model, but not suddenly on June 2nd.
So this is a classical breach of contract… I dont think they give a **** about this.
Open.AI want that we use a Claude Code, Is much better !
Now the best model for code codex 5.3 is remove without choice.
Its a shame and no respect with customer
This is honestly absurd. They have unceremoniously just rug-pulled the only good model off the extension. Not only that, but now we are forced to use 5.4 or 5.5 models and they are VASTLY more expensive.
I could use 5.3 all day, and now I can’t use it for 2 hours before running out of tokens.
This is an absolute scam dude.
Not only that but 5.4 and 5.5 need to be prompted very very differently in order to get them to be as effective as 5.3 Codex. I don’t really believe in “This model is worse” but having to completely change language and style to get similar results with no other option is incredibly frustrating.
Sorry to hear this caught you by surprise. GPT-5.2 and GPT-5.3-Codex are no longer available in Codex through a ChatGPT subscription. The available path now is to use them in Codex through the API, or adjust the workflow to the newer models, as you already pointed out.
I think it is fair to share with the team that this could have been communicated better. There also should have been more time between the announcement and the change.
So basically you are saying that the VS Code extension has lost 80% of the available models and there’s now no other options? Are you planning on migrating the VS Code extension to use a direct Codex subscription? “When logged into your ChatGPT account”…which has always been the only way to use Codex? So you guys provided a tool specifically for Codex, but now we can only have access to the models provided if we build our own? Why not have the extension “use the api”?
For free plans? The only other option for Plus is 5.4 and 5.4 mini.
That’s a pretty interesting way to say “We are forcing everyone to use the most expensive model that burns through tokens, effectively knee-capping every single user”.
I’m about 2 seconds from completely switching to Claude. You all should look at those comments and reflect
If this truly is the case, then the ChatGPT website needs updating as it still says you can access the Codex agent via a Plus / Pro / Business plan which is seriously confusing. I was about to upgrade to Pro to get more usage of Codex but I’m not sure what’s happening at this stage.
