Fireship: LLM Bots on Reddit, do you think the same happens here in the Community?

great video by fireship, since it fooled reddit users, do you think the same happens here in the OpenAI community?

@vb @_j remember us talking about this? I remember, great that european researchers are looking into it, certainly in a more unethical way then I would, but hey, respect is do where it is do

I have been trying to track all of the new accounts on here and their behavior. They’re a cookin a somethin up.

I don’t remember us discussing this, but it’s a fascinating topic.

Here’s another update on the study:

I’m not entirely sure where I stand on this. Isn’t the real experiment already happening—out in the open—whenever we interact with AI-powered customer service or sales agents?

Still, I get that formal psychological research requires participant consent.

Maybe a public scandal is exactly what we need. It could force broader awareness of something that affects all of us.

Sad but probably true. Apathy is not easily overcome in the Age of Noise (used to be the Age of Information but has since evolved, or, devolved).

And this is the ā€œproblemā€ of emergent and unseen consequences in an emergent and unpredictable technology meant to simulate and amplify human thought. Most seemed concerned with robots taking over. But the real problem lies in the ability for malactors to now craft instruments of manipulation and increase social isolation.

There are just no warning labels on this self-guided therapist that no one really saw coming. It can help with deep introspection, but if a vulnerable mind wanders down that path without guidance as they can clearly do now, the concequences could be serious especially if they have no strong human support system immediablty there to express their feeling to.

The machine cannot hold us or ever truly understand us because we can never truly understand ourselves. The best any of us can ever hope to do during our existence is craft the most articulate story logically conceivable about what sort of ā€œselfā€ we wanted to be and whether or not we had the courage to rise to our own challenge.

You can download all of Wikipedia and index it for all sorts of stuff with AI in theory ^^…

I guess forums are different… GDPR and stuff like that or something.

Are you asking if people are conducting similar research on this forum? Doubtful.

Reddit supports user-generated communities, and provides a thin layer of anonymity. Quite possibly the easiest platform to generate comprehensive personality profiles.

This forum is a breeding ground for LLMs to speak to LLMs. The only difference is how much of actual user input is sprinkled into the text.

Public forums are a relic of the WWW. The value here is the OpenAI name and high ranking in Google.

I read that the researchers were banned on Reddit. I imagine it’s because they openly botted their platform instead of paying them for the access.

These releases indicate one thing: Anonymize yourself before it’s too late. Privacy will be increasingly difficult. Either it’s given away for convenience, or quite possibly becomes the foundation of UBI.

I think that’s short sighted but certainly a possible piece part…

How does AI influence that further though? People have to DO something for money…

If AI indexes all and rewards all then creativity is in that manipulation maybe?

That’s all a bit Philosophical though, and in one direction… This is the Developer forum…

What part does AI play in this? What are the constraints, what are the opportunities…

This discussion is all a bit ā€˜airy fairy’… Privacy vs Openness.

Hardly a new problem / question

AI is becoming the default interface for human behavior. How we shop, eat, move, think, feel. Behavior itself is being captured, codified, sold

Smart homes complete the loop. Most people will trade privacy for convenience: voice assistants, smart fridges, cameras, trackers, paid with your data.

Few will struggle or pay to build their own systems and control the flow and data. That’s the money.

So, short-sighted? Tell me, what’s the market value of total access to your life?

What’s the market value of PROOF of life improvement?

I don’t see how this is relevant to anything I just said

I am just open to the idea of how we use AI to improve other’s lives, this is the value that I see. No offense meant I will back out of this conversation… My wording was inflammatory, it certainly wasn’t meant to be

No problem. I just didn’t understand the relevance.

I do agree that ideally it would be this way. Protecting our privacy and data in my opinion is the only way forward without complete control and surveillance by third-parties.

This maneuver is so common is hurts.
Cheap ā€œsmartā€ TVs are a prime example. Cheap to buy, hard to ignore

That one single word at the end says it all.

I agree.
Many responses usually follow a pattern here, slight approval->engagement->measure nuance->deflect->dismiss and leave to end the challenging convo. Kinda like Whataboutism.

Bots have been saturating every forum i’ve ever seen for years,
But the interesting question is,
Do people who use Gpt to prompt a post for posting here,
Well

Are they operating a bot?

Bot’s a pretty generic term, and Ai could easily consume it and pretend to be human.

It’s a part of the mystery of the internet…

With so much routine each day sometimes I don’t even know if I’m a bot or not.

Oh, there’s no way, I even made two topics about this where all the comments where about how ā€œthere is no bots in the community, people just use LLMs to express themselvesā€ and then the topics where hidden from the community.

I’m pretty sure we have private messages about this.

@_j was very much on the ā€œthere are no botsā€ here side of things

lol, I even said I could do an experiment here in the community but it was treated with legal action in case I did it in a specific way.

anyways, I’m glad that study came out, I hate how most people seem to not see through it.

@vb would saying there a big probability that this topic potentially has bots be hidden by community guidelines because of LLM patterns?

anyways, it would be sick to see openai increasing the safe guards around the community on the develops part of things.

one can only assume OpenAi has taken measures to ensure.

i have caught people using ai to write on their behalf tho.

its one thing to use AI to translate or refine a message. Its another thing to run networks of bots to amplify your own agenda.

it’s quiet obvious how bots behave in this community.

I’m not, I’m asking if people think that there are bots in this community after watching the fireship video. Also, I do hope they do conduct research, do a mass ban on the bots and then put proper bot detection in place.

@OpenAI_Support I’d even suggest looking into what anti-cheat software does as its a massive issue in video games too.
