I use ChatGPT extensively for long-term projects, development, research, and learning. One of my biggest frustrations is how difficult it becomes to manage multiple related conversations.
I’d like to suggest two complementary features.
1. Visual conversation trees
Instead of managing branching conversations as separate entries in the sidebar, I’d like an optional visual tree interface.
A main conversation would act as the trunk, with branches representing different directions of discussion.
Users could:
-
See all branches and their relationships visually.
-
Navigate between branches.
-
Create nested branches from any point.
-
Easily return to the original conversation.
This would be especially valuable for complex projects where multiple discussions evolve in parallel.
2. Merge context from multiple conversations
This is the feature I’d find particularly useful.
Imagine I have two conversations:
-
Chat A: Software architecture and implementation decisions.
-
Chat B: Experiments, testing, and research results.
I’d like to select both conversations and create a third conversation (Chat C) that understands the relevant knowledge from both.
This should not simply concatenate the message histories.
Instead, the new conversation should inherit relevant context, decisions, and findings from both source conversations, while preserving their original histories.
Ideally, users could review the imported context, resolve conflicting information, and see which conversation particular knowledge came from.
Why this matters
ChatGPT already supports branching and Projects, but these features don’t provide an explicit way to reconnect different conversations and control exactly which histories contribute to a new discussion.
Together, these two features could transform ChatGPT from a collection of linear conversations into a much more useful workspace for long-term thinking and complex projects.
I’d be interested to hear whether other users would find this workflow useful.
