Feature Request: Turn Codex Into a Full AI-Native IDE
Codex is already an incredible coding agent. The next step should be giving it a complete development environment.
I’d love to see OpenAI build a full Codex IDE, similar to the experience developers get with Cursor or Antigravity—but deeply integrated around Codex agents.
The vision
Instead of switching between an IDE, Codex, terminal, browser, GitHub, and debugging tools, imagine:
Codex IDE = Editor + Agent + Terminal + Browser + GitHub + Debugger + Preview
All working together.
What I’d love to see
-
Project-wide understanding — architecture, dependencies, conventions, docs, and tests -
Agentic coding — give Codex a goal and let it plan, implement, test, debug, and iterate -
Multi-file editing with a powerful VS Code-class editor -
Integrated terminal with configurable permissions -
Live browser/app preview so Codex can fix UI and runtime issues -
Integrated debugging — logs, stack traces, breakpoints, console, network -
Deep Git/GitHub integration — branches, commits, PRs, issues, reviews -
Automated testing — run tests, diagnose failures, and fix them -
Multi-agent workflows for larger projects -
Plan → Execute → Test → Review → Approve workflow -
Persistent project instructions/context so developers don’t have to repeatedly explain their codebase
The experience I’m imagining
I should be able to open a repository and simply say:
“Implement issue #142, run the tests, fix any failures, review your changes, and prepare a PR.”
Codex should handle the engineering workflow while I remain in control of the important decisions.
The goal isn’t just AI-assisted coding.
It’s an AI-native software development environment.
Cursor showed how powerful it is when AI is built directly into the IDE. I think OpenAI could take this significantly further with Codex’s agentic capabilities.
What do you think?
Would you use a dedicated Codex IDE if OpenAI built one?
What would be your #1 must-have feature?
If enough developers want this, I hope OpenAI considers making a full Codex IDE a major product direction.
