I’d like to propose a feature that could significantly expand the practical usefulness of OpenAI Codex for developers and advanced users.

Feature Request:
Evolve Codex into a secure, action-capable agent—similar in spirit to an “OpenClaw”-style system—able not only to generate code, but to execute meaningful tasks within controlled environments.

Key Capabilities Requested:

  • Local & Remote Execution Environments

    • Ability to operate safely on a user’s machine with strict sandboxing

    • Option to run in isolated environments such as VPS or cloud workspaces

  • Action-Oriented Task Handling

    • Edit files and documents directly

    • Send emails or interact with communication tools

    • Automate workflows (e.g., file organization, report generation)

  • Security & Permissions Layer

    • Granular permission system (approve/deny actions)

    • Full transparency of intended actions before execution

    • Audit logs of all operations performed by the agent

  • Compatibility & Extensibility

    • Interoperability with existing agent frameworks (in the spirit of OpenClaw)

    • Plugin or API system for extending capabilities safely

Why This Matters:

Today, Codex is incredibly powerful for generating code—but developers still need to manually execute, test, and integrate that code into real workflows. Bridging this gap would unlock a new paradigm:

  • From code generation → to task execution

  • From assistant → to autonomous, supervised agent

This would dramatically improve productivity for developers, operators, and even non-technical users managing digital workflows.

Important Consideration:
Security must remain the top priority. Any such system should be strictly sandboxed, permission-based, and transparent by design.


This evolution could position Codex as not just a coding assistant, but a true programmable agent operating safely across environments.
