The ChatGPT desktop app’s left sidebar is currently too narrow for many chat and Project names. Longer titles are automatically shortened with ..., making it difficult to identify conversations.
For example:
A9 RAM Cost Esti…
I tried moving the mouse over the title, but no tooltip appears showing the complete title.
Suggested improvements
1. Make the sidebar resizable
Allow users to drag the right edge of the sidebar left or right to choose their preferred width.
For example:
Narrow:
A9 RAM Cost Esti…
Wider:
A9 RAM Cost Estimate — GEEKOM A5, 64GB RAM…
This would let users see more of their chat and Project names without opening each conversation.
2. Add a full-title hover tooltip
When a title is still truncated, hovering the mouse over it should display a small tooltip containing the complete title.
The tooltip should:
Appear only when the title is truncated.
Show the entire chat/Project name.
Disappear automatically when the mouse moves away.
Work for both chat titles and Project names.
Ideally work in both the Windows desktop app and web version.
Why this matters
For users with a large number of conversations and Projects, the sidebar is an important navigation tool. Being able to resize it and see full titles would make organizing and finding conversations much faster.
A resizable sidebar + hover full-title tooltip would be a relatively small UI improvement with a big usability benefit.
Same here. Conversation titles are cut off and the horizontal scrollbar at the very bottom is pretty much useless.
Meanwhile, trying to report this problem was even more frustrating. The only option is the support chatbot which told me to look for an “all-conversations flyout,” to use Search as a workaround, and to send feedback using a thumbs-down button that doesn’t exist in my interface.
I asked how to send feedback to OpenAI and was directed to a Crisis Helpline page. Then the chatbot told me to use the chat bubble, while I was already talking to it in the chat bubble. It told me it couldn’t log my feedback with the product team, then said it could document it in the support thread as product/UI feedback.
In short, please let us widen the sidebar so we can read conversation titles, and please provide a clear way to send product suggestions or complaints to OpenAI without going around in circles with a chatbot. Neither of these should be this difficult.
I’m experiencing this exact problem after the recent ChatGPT web sidebar change. Until a few days ago, I could expand the sidebar and properly read my chat titles. Now the sidebar is extremely narrow, titles are heavily truncated, and it cannot be resized.
The horizontal scrollbar does not solve the problem—you still cannot see the complete chat titles. For users managing many chats and ongoing projects, this seriously hurts navigation and productivity.
This should be treated as a UI regression, not simply a request for a new feature. Please restore the ability to drag and resize the sidebar.
Thanks for explaining this. We’ll pass along the sidebar resizing, full-title tooltip and clearer feedback-flow requests to the product team. We don’t have a timeline to share.
