Feature request: Better use of large-screen space in ChatGPT chats

On large and ultrawide displays, ChatGPT keeps the conversation inside a narrow fixed-width column, leaving most of the available screen unused. As shown in the attached screenshot, a substantial amount of usable space is empty while longer responses remain vertically compressed and require unnecessary scrolling.

A more responsive, user-adjustable layout could preserve comfortable reading widths while making better use of larger displays.

Suggested UI/UX improvements

  • Adjustable conversation width: Offer compact, comfortable, wide, and full-width modes.

  • Draggable content boundaries: Let users resize the conversation area directly.

  • Adaptive response layouts: Keep prose at a readable line length, but allow tables, code blocks, images, diagrams, citations, and generated artifacts to use more horizontal space.

  • Optional split view: Allow the conversation to remain visible beside a document, canvas, file preview, code output, or source panel.

  • Per-device persistence: Remember the selected layout separately for laptop, desktop, and ultrawide displays.

  • Responsive breakpoints: Scale the interface progressively rather than applying one fixed maximum width to every desktop screen.

UCD and accessibility benefits

From a user-centred design perspective, this would support different users, tasks, display sizes, and accessibility needs rather than assuming that one reading width fits every workflow.

A flexible layout could provide:

  • Less scrolling and reduced interaction overhead.

  • Better comparison of long answers, tables, code, and source material.

  • Improved productivity for research, writing, analysis, and development work.

  • Greater control for users with low vision, zoomed interfaces, or different reading preferences.

  • Better support for ultrawide monitors and multi-window professional workflows.

  • Reduced cognitive load by keeping related information visible at the same time.

The goal would not necessarily be to stretch every paragraph across the entire screen. Long prose still benefits from a controlled line length. Instead, ChatGPT could use the available space contextually: readable columns for text, wider regions for content that genuinely benefits from horizontal room, and optional secondary panels for related material.

Example layouts

A few possible implementations:

  1. Reading mode: A centred, comfortable-width text column similar to the current layout.

  2. Wide workspace: Wider responses for code, data tables, images, and technical documentation.

  3. Two-column research mode: Conversation on one side, sources or file previews on the other.

  4. Ultrawide mode: A primary conversation column with optional navigation, outline, citations, or conversation branches in the surrounding space.

This would make ChatGPT feel less like a mobile layout enlarged onto a desktop screen and more like an adaptive workspace designed around the user’s display and current task.
