We are developing and testing a custom MCP server with ChatGPT Developer Mode.
ChatGPT currently provides a Refresh button in the UI that causes ChatGPT to rediscover the MCP server’s current tools/actions after the server has been updated.
Could OpenAI expose this operation through an authenticated developer API?
For example, conceptually:
POST /chatgpt/apps/{app_id}/refresh
or a similar developer endpoint.
Our MCP deployment pipeline is already automated:
STOP → CLEAN → BUILD → DEPLOY → HEALTH CHECK
After deployment, however, updating ChatGPT’s cached MCP action definitions still requires interacting with the ChatGPT UI and pressing Refresh.
A supported API could allow a CI/CD pipeline to:
BUILD → DEPLOY MCP → HEALTH CHECK → REQUEST CHATGPT REFRESH → VERIFY TOOL SCHEMA
Ideally, the API could return the discovered tool/schema version or provide a status endpoint so developers could verify that ChatGPT is using the newly deployed MCP definition.
This would avoid developers resorting to browser automation or undocumented internal ChatGPT endpoints simply to automate an operation that already exists as an official UI button.
Our implementation provides a concrete example where this would be useful: we can independently deploy and health-check our MCP server, but we still need the UI Refresh operation before verifying that ChatGPT has discovered the newest tool definitions.
Thank you for considering an official MCP refresh/rediscovery API for Developer Mode.
