When a conversation becomes very long, it would be useful to have an option to archive an older portion of the chat while keeping the recent portion active in the same conversation.
This could provide a simpler alternative to moving to an entirely new chat. The archived portion could remain accessible for reference, while the active conversation continues with its recent context and identity intact.
The goal is not to delete old conversation history, but to let a long-running conversation continue without requiring the user to abandon the chat entirely.
This could also serve as a simpler near-term approach to the long-conversation continuity problem. Instead of requiring a complete handoff to a new chat, users could keep the recent portion of the conversation active while older parts are archived. Even if more advanced context-transfer or handoff features are developed later, partial archiving could still be useful as a lightweight way to keep long-running chats manageable.
A simple way to imagine the feature would be an option such as “Archive everything before this point.” A user could choose a point in a very long conversation, archive everything before it, and simply continue from there.
In a sense, this could be thought of as the inverse of branching. Branching preserves the conversation up to a chosen point and starts a new path from there. Partial archiving would do the opposite: it would archive the older portion before a chosen point while allowing the current conversation to continue forward as the same chat.
