Feature Request: OpenAI Virtual Drive — A Local, User-Controlled Workspace

I would like to propose an OpenAI Virtual Drive: a cloud-backed workspace exposed to the user’s operating system as a normal virtual drive—for example, O:\.

The aim is not simply to provide cloud storage. It is to give users direct control over the organisation of their OpenAI conversations, generated content and other assets, while retaining synchronisation with OpenAI services.

For example:

O:\
├── ChatGPT\
│   ├── Projects\
│   ├── Conversations\
│   ├── Documents\
│   └── Archive\
├── Images\
├── Audio\
└── Other OpenAI Products\

ChatGPT conversations as HTML

Within O:\ChatGPT, conversations could be represented as ordinary HTML files.

HTML would make conversations:

  • readable outside ChatGPT;

  • searchable and indexable by the operating system;

  • editable with standard tools;

  • capable of linking naturally to images and other files;

  • portable and usable without proprietary software.

Generated or uploaded assets—PDF, ODT, images, audio and other files—could exist as normal files and folders, linked from the relevant conversations.

Local organisation and editing

Users could reorganise their workspace using familiar filesystem operations.

For example, they could:

  • rename and reorganise conversations;

  • create their own folder structures;

  • split or merge conversations;

  • move or copy messages between conversations;

  • insert moved material at a specific point in another conversation;

  • organise generated documents and images alongside the conversations that created them;

  • create links between related conversations and assets;

  • archive material without losing it.

This would complement proposals for Split / Move / Copy / Merge functionality inside ChatGPT itself.

Explicit synchronisation

An important part of the concept would be an explicit Sync with Server function.

A user could reorganise and edit the local workspace first. Once satisfied with the result, they could select Sync with Server, making the new organisation available across ChatGPT and other devices.

The system could maintain stable internal IDs, version history and conflict detection so that moving or renaming files does not break relationships between conversations and assets.

Why this could be important

Most AI services still treat conversation history as something that users browse inside the application.

An OpenAI Virtual Drive would treat the user’s accumulated conversations and creations as a user-controlled digital workspace.

ChatGPT would become an intelligent interface to that workspace rather than the only container in which it can be accessed.

This could eventually extend across OpenAI products, giving each user a persistent personal workspace represented both in OpenAI services and as a familiar filesystem on their own computer.

The result would combine:

AI workspace + cloud storage + local filesystem + portable personal archive.

I think this could substantially differentiate OpenAI from competing AI platforms while also addressing a growing problem for long-term ChatGPT users: after years of use, conversations and generated material become valuable archives, but they need much better tools for organisation, preservation and reuse.

The principle I would suggest is simple:

My OpenAI workspace should remain useful as my archive grows—not become harder to manage because it grows.

Thanks for the detailed idea! We'll share the request for a user-controlled virtual drive with editable archives and explicit sync. Eligible account exports are available today: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7260999, but don't provide that full workflow. No timeline to share.
