A Persistent AI Workspace for Every User

Feature Proposal: A Persistent AI Workspace for Every User

I think one of the next major steps for ChatGPT could be giving every user a persistent AI workspace rather than treating files and information primarily as things attached to individual conversations.

The idea

Give each ChatGPT account a dedicated cloud workspace with storage included in the user’s plan.

For example:

- Free/standard amount of storage included with the plan

- Paid tiers receive more storage

- Users can upload or create files and folders

- ChatGPT can search and retrieve information from the workspace

- ChatGPT can create, modify and organize files when authorized

- Projects can use the workspace as persistent context

- Connected services can gradually become additional sources and tools

The important distinction is that this would not simply be “Google Drive inside ChatGPT.”

The workspace would be an environment where the AI itself works.

What this could look like

My AI Workspace

├── Projects

│ ├── Gallery App

│ │ ├── Research

│ │ ├── Design

│ │ ├── Code

│ │ └── Decisions

│ └── Other Projects

│

├── Knowledge

├── Documents

├── Research

└── AI-generated files

A user could tell ChatGPT:

«“Keep everything related to my Gallery project in this workspace.”»

Later, the user could simply say:

«“Continue working on the Gallery project.”»

ChatGPT would have a persistent environment containing the project’s files, research, decisions and other relevant information instead of requiring the user to reconstruct the context every time.

Why I think this matters

ChatGPT is increasingly becoming something people use for projects rather than isolated questions.

The next step could be moving from:

AI that remembers conversations

to:

AI that has a persistent working environment.

The user owns the workspace and controls what the AI can access. External services could then be connected to that workspace over time.

This also provides a foundation for increasingly capable agents. The AI doesn’t need to solve autonomous organization perfectly on day one. The important first step is giving it a persistent place to work.

A relatively simple first version could just be:

storage + files/folders + search + AI read/write access + Projects integration.

More advanced organization, external integrations and autonomous project maintenance could come later.

I think this could eventually make the AI account feel less like a collection of conversations and more like a personal computing environment for the user and their AI.
