Feature Request: Longer Conversations, Weighted Message Limits and Flexible Model Switching

Introduction

I’d like to suggest an alternative approach to ChatGPT’s Free-tier usage limits.

My biggest concern is that conversations can become unusable after relatively few messages. This is particularly frustrating for people who use ChatGPT for long-running creative projects, storytelling, brainstorming, learning and other ongoing discussions.

I’d much rather have a reasonable, transparent usage allowance with genuinely long conversations than an experience advertised as unlimited that doesn’t practically allow conversations to continue for long.

My proposal is to combine a weighted premium-message allowance, manual model selection, automatic model fallback and more generous conversation capacity.

1. Longer conversation capacity — the highest priority

The first priority should be restoring or substantially improving conversation capacity.

Users should be able to maintain long-running conversations without constantly worrying about reaching a conversation limit after relatively few messages.

This is especially important for creative projects where continuity matters and starting another conversation can mean losing the natural flow of an ongoing discussion.

I’d prefer a generous, reliable conversation capacity even if other usage allowances need to be adjusted to make it possible.

2. A weighted premium-message allowance

Instead of giving Free users an unrestricted number of premium-model messages, provide approximately 30–50 weighted message units per allowance period.

Different activities would consume different amounts depending on their resource requirements.

For example:

  • Ordinary text messages: 1 unit.
  • Messages involving images: approximately 2–3 units.
  • Data analysis: approximately 1.5–2 units.
  • Other resource-intensive activities: weighted according to their actual processing requirements.

These are suggested starting values rather than rigid requirements. The system could adjust the weights according to actual resource consumption.

This would make ordinary conversations more affordable to support without treating every type of request as equally demanding.

3. Restore manual model switching

Users should be able to manually choose between available models, rather than relying exclusively on automatic switching.

For example:

  • Users can select the higher-capability model when they need better reasoning, more detailed responses or help with complicated tasks.
  • They can manually switch to an ordinary model whenever they want.
  • Messages sent using the ordinary model should not consume the premium-model allowance.
  • Users should be able to switch between available models freely without being forced to spend their premium allowance.

This would also allow users to save their premium messages for tasks where the additional capabilities matter most.

4. Automatic fallback when the premium allowance runs out

Once the premium allowance is exhausted, ChatGPT should automatically switch to an available lower-capability model instead of preventing further conversation.

Users should still be able to send ordinary messages, brainstorm, discuss ideas and continue their existing conversations.

When the premium allowance resets, users should be able to select their preferred higher-capability model again.

This is particularly important because running out of premium messages shouldn’t mean running out of conversation.

5. A reasonable Free and paid plan balance

I understand that premium models, image generation and other resource-intensive features have real operating costs.

I’d be willing to accept a cooldown longer than the previous five-hour period in exchange for a more generous conversation experience and a predictable premium allowance.

Paid users could retain substantially higher allowances, shorter cooldowns and other usage advantages.

This proposal is not asking for Free users to receive paid-exclusive features. Features such as advanced agent capabilities, Dots, premium GIF generation, automations and other paid-exclusive functionality can remain restricted to their respective plans.

The suggestion is specifically about improving access to available models, conversation capacity and usage flexibility.

6. Why this would be better

This system would give users more control over their available resources.

For example, someone working on a long creative-writing project could use premium messages for important scenes and complicated continuity, then switch to an ordinary model to discuss future concepts and smaller ideas while waiting for their premium allowance to reset.

The same principle could benefit people using ChatGPT for learning, programming, planning and everyday conversations.

It could also make the Free plan a more appealing introduction to ChatGPT. Users would get to experience the higher-capability models while retaining the ability to continue using the platform after their premium allowance runs out.

Conclusion

I would much rather have a transparent, weighted usage system with manual model selection, automatic fallback and genuinely long conversations than an apparently unlimited experience that cannot reliably support extended discussions.

The main principle is simple: running out of premium messages should never mean running out of conversation.

I believe this would be a more balanced experience for Free users while still preserving meaningful advantages for paid subscribers.
