Feature Request: Long Conversation Navigation, Branching & User-Controlled Pruning
As ChatGPT’s context window becomes increasingly powerful, users can now maintain very long conversations involving hundreds of turns and multiple layers of research and reasoning.
However, the longer the conversation becomes, the harder it is for users to navigate, organize, and correct the context.
I suggest introducing a dedicated Long Conversation Navigator with three complementary capabilities:
1. Long Conversation Navigator
For long conversations, ChatGPT could automatically identify major questions, topic transitions, important reasoning steps, and key conclusions, and display them in a clickable sidebar.

The UI could resemble a visual “flight path” or instrument-style navigation panel.
The important concept is not the visual design itself, but a Conversation Navigator that allows users to quickly jump between important reasoning nodes.
Ideally, each node could also show:

Key conclusions
-
Topic branches
-
Important user questions

Important conclusions previously generated by ChatGPT
This would turn a long conversation from a simple chronological transcript into a Research Workspace.
2. User-Controlled Conversation Pruning
This is particularly important.
Users should be able to delete or remove part of a conversation without deleting the entire conversation.
For example:
Main research topic: China real-estate bottom
→ PBOC data
→ Household credit
→ Housing sales
→ Conversation temporarily goes off-topic: LLM behavior
→ Returns to real-estate analysis
The user should be able to select the off-topic section and choose:
Delete / Prune this section
The resulting conversation would effectively become:
PBOC data → Household credit → Housing sales → Prices → Bottoming analysis
This would give users a way to correct context drift instead of having to abandon an otherwise valuable long-term conversation and start over.
3. Branching
Not every off-topic discussion should be deleted.
A valuable tangent could instead become a separate branch:
Main: China Real Estate — Bottoming Process
└── Branch: LLM Long-Context Behavior
The branch could preserve its own history without continuing to contaminate the main research thread.
Why this matters
As context windows become larger, simply increasing memory is not enough.
Users also need the ability to:
find the right context → understand its structure → preserve useful branches → remove irrelevant context → return to the main reasoning path.
In other words:
The future of long-context AI should not only be about remembering more. It should also be about giving users meaningful control over what is remembered, how it is organized, and what is removed.
A combination of:
Timeline + Topic Tree + Branches + Navigation + User-Controlled Pruning
could make ChatGPT much more powerful as a long-term thinking and research environment.
