Feature Request: “Listen From Here” for Read Aloud + Reader Mode
I often use ChatGPT by dictating a message, receiving a full written response, and then using Read Aloud to listen to it. I prefer this workflow to Voice Mode because I can keep the full written conversation while switching between reading and listening.
The feature I would most like to see is very simple:
1. “Listen from here”
When I long-press and select a word or sentence in a ChatGPT message, the menu could offer:
- Listen from here — start Read Aloud at that point and continue to the end.
- Read selection aloud — read only the selected text.
This would solve several problems at once.
If playback is interrupted, I would not need to restart a long answer from the beginning. If I have already read half of a response visually and then need to do something else, I could simply select where I stopped and continue by listening.
It would also make long texts, chapters, and documents much easier to use without splitting them into many separate messages.
2. The same feature for uploaded files
It would be very useful if Read Aloud could also work with user-uploaded documents and texts — for example DOCX, PDF, EPUB, TXT, personal writing, purchased ebooks, or other files the user has legal access to.
3. Future Reader Mode
A more advanced version could become a dedicated Reader Mode.
ChatGPT could read a book or document, remember the current position, continue from a selected paragraph, and allow the user to pause and discuss what was just read.
For example:
“Stop. Why do you think this character reacted that way?”
After discussing the scene:
“Okay, continue.”
This would create something between an ebook reader, an audiobook, and an AI reading companion.
But even without a full Reader Mode, adding “Listen from here” and “Read selection aloud” to the existing Read Aloud feature would already be a major improvement for long-form ChatGPT use.
