Feature request for Family Workspace

Feature Request: ChatGPT Family Workspace with Private and Shared Areas

I would like OpenAI to consider developing a ChatGPT Family plan and polling current users to measure interest and identify the most valuable features.

This is not a request for discounted access. I would be willing to pay appropriately for a thoughtfully designed family product because it would provide capabilities that separate individual subscriptions cannot.

Each family member should have:

  • A separate login and personal identity
  • Private conversations and chat history
  • Individual memory and personalization
  • Private files, projects, and connected accounts
  • Complete control over what is shared

The plan should also include an optional family workspace where members can collaborate on selected projects, such as vacations, household decisions, home projects, schedules, major purchases, wedding planning, caregiving, or family finances.

The most important principle is clear partitioning. Nothing from a member’s private account, memory, conversations, files, or connected services should enter the shared family workspace unless that member deliberately shares it.

A Family plan could include:

  • Unified household billing and account management
  • Separate, fully private spaces for each family member
  • Opt-in shared projects, conversations, and files
  • Clearly defined owner, adult, and child permissions
  • Age-appropriate safeguards for younger users
  • A shared family assistant that uses only information intentionally added to the family workspace
  • The ability to control which members can access each shared project

ChatGPT already has many of the necessary building blocks: memory, Projects, shared Projects, workspaces, permissions, and connected services. Combining them into a purpose-built household product would create substantial value beyond what individual accounts can provide.

This would not simply be a family-priced subscription. It would be a private, collaborative AI environment designed around how families actually organize their lives and make decisions together. I would gladly pay for that value.

Please consider polling the ChatGPT community to determine demand for this type of Family workspace.

I strongly support this.

The private vs. intentionally shared distinction you described is especially important. I think that model could solve several gaps in ChatGPT today, not just for families.

Finances is a great example. I would love to be able to connect household financial accounts and deliberately expose specific accounts or summaries to a shared family workspace, without exposing either person’s private conversations, memories, files, or unrelated connected accounts.

I’m running into a related need on the Business side. ChatGPT Business has multiple seats and shared workspaces, but it currently does not appear to have access to the new Finances feature at all. It would be useful if OpenAI eventually allowed Business workspaces to connect financial accounts and selectively share them with authorized members.

A common underlying architecture could potentially serve both use cases:

  • Private identity, memory, files, and connections by default

  • Explicitly shared workspace resources

  • Per-person and per-resource permissions

  • Shared Projects that can access only approved information

  • Connected accounts that can be selectively exposed to a workspace

  • A clear indication of what information the assistant is using

For families, that could enable household finances, travel planning, caregiving, purchases, schedules, and other shared decisions without destroying individual privacy.

For businesses, the same model could allow an owner to share an operating account with a manager or bookkeeper while keeping payroll, tax, investment, or personal accounts restricted.

I think the key idea in your proposal is bigger than a Family subscription itself: ChatGPT needs a strong concept of private context vs. deliberately shared context.

A Family Workspace would be a fantastic use of that model.

Hey jasonphuber and thegrim.shadow101, welcome to the forum!

Thanks for taking the time to share this feature request. A Family Workspace could be a useful addition, and I appreciate you explaining the use case.

I'll make sure the feedback is surfaced to the product team for consideration.

To keep feature requests consolidated, I'll be closing this topic.
