Feature Request: Enhanced Integration and Usability for “Projects” AKA Smart Folders

Projects a great step forward for organization! However, there are a few areas where additional functionality could make “Projects” even more powerful and user-friendly.

1. Integration with Custom GPTs

  • Use Case: Many users, myself included, have invested significant time into training Custom GPTs tailored to specific workflows and tasks. Currently, these GPTs cannot be directly utilized within Smart Folders.
  • Feature Request:
    • Enable calling or embedding Custom GPTs within Smart Folders.
    • Allow a Smart Folder to inherit the capabilities of a Custom GPT, eliminating the need to duplicate instructions and files for similar tasks.
  • Alternative: If full integration isn’t feasible, provide the ability to initiate a chat in any GPT and specify where the conversation should be saved (e.g., a designated Smart Folder).

2. Chat Management and Organization

  • Current Challenge: There’s no straightforward way to move existing chats into Smart Folders. This limits the flexibility and organization potential of the feature.
  • Feature Request:
    • Add an option to move chats into a folder via the three-dot menu on the left-hand chat list.
    • Allow drag-and-drop functionality for chats into folders in the web interface.
    • Ensure folder management (e.g., adding/moving chats) is consistent between web and desktop apps.

Additional Considerations:

  • Will Smart Folders be available for integration with the desktop app? As of now, this functionality seems limited to the web interface.
• Offering folder-level permissions or sharing options could also make “Projects” more collaborative for team-based workflows.

These enhancements would align “Projects” with the flexibility users expect and make it a cornerstone for managing complex tasks and workflows. Thank you for considering these ideas—I’m excited to see how this feature evolves!

For others reading this thread…

If I share a chat thread, I cannot move that thread into a project folder. If I create a chat thread in a project I cannot share that thread. This means I can’t organize my threads using project folders because they cannot be shared.

I have always supported ChatGPT through subscription and am willing to pay for the service. I don’t like being “that complaints guy,” but now I must.

To my great chagrin, the “Add to Project” option under the three-dot menu has been removed — quietly, and without warning. This is a major step backward.

I do not always know at the start of a chat whether it will grow into a project-sized endeavour. Without the ability to retroactively add chats to a project, I am now left with ten separate, related sessions that I must manually migrate. That means:

  • Opening each one,

  • Copying the entire chat (some are already at full capacity, so no summarising or selecting only parts),

  • Starting a new chat inside the project folder,

  • Pasting it all,

  • Renaming.

This is not just clunky — it is a vast waste of time, and frankly, money for a paying subscriber.

Please restore the “Add to Project” functionality or provide a proper alternative. Removing it has actively degraded my workflow, not improved it.
