Feature Request: Cross-Chat Decision Lineage / “Forensic Librarian” Agent
I’d like to propose a ChatGPT feature that goes beyond chat history search: an agent that can trace the evolution of a topic across all prior chats and show how a user’s thinking changed over time.
The need is not just retrieval. It is contextual synthesis.
For users who rely on ChatGPT over months or years for planning and decision-making, important conclusions often emerge gradually across multiple conversations. Current chat search can help find fragments, but it does not show:
-
where the same topic appeared across different chats
-
how assumptions or priorities changed
-
where a direction was refined or reversed
-
which generated files or artifacts came from those discussions
-
what the most current conclusion is
The ideal output would look something like:
first mention → major refinements → decision shift → final direction → latest artifact
This would be especially valuable for long-term use cases like:
-
financial and retirement planning
-
health decision-making
-
home design and major purchases
-
business strategy
-
education and learning plans
-
any project with multiple revisions and downloadable outputs
In short, I think ChatGPT needs a way to help users audit the history of their own reasoning, not just search old messages.
That would make ChatGPT much more useful as a true long-term thinking partner.
