I would like to propose a feature that allows users to save selected information from one ChatGPT conversation directly to another project, chat, file, or structured record.
Current problem:
During a normal conversation, information may emerge that should be preserved in a separate long-term record. At present, the user must leave the conversation, open the destination, and manually copy and edit the information. This interrupts the conversation and creates risks of omission, transcription errors, and loss of context.
Proposed workflow:
-
ChatGPT detects information that may be worth recording.
-
It presents a proposed record containing the text, date, people or subjects, category, and destination.
-
The user reviews, edits, and explicitly approves the proposed record.
-
Only after approval, ChatGPT saves it to the selected project, chat, file, or connected database.
-
The saved record retains a reference to its source conversation and can be edited, undone, or deleted.
Important safeguards:
-
Never save information without explicit user approval.
-
Clearly display the destination before saving.
-
Allow users to edit the proposed record.
-
Preserve source traceability.
-
Provide undo and deletion controls.
-
Respect project boundaries, permissions, and privacy settings.
-
Make record detection opt-in and configurable, with a manual save command available as an alternative.
-
Allow saving only to destinations where the user already has explicit write permission, subject to workspace and administrator policies.
Example use cases include long-term personal records, family records, learning logs, health records, business decisions, incident reports, and project documentation.
Related but distinct request:
This differs from proposals for persistent documents shared across chats within the same project. My request focuses on detecting record-worthy information during a conversation and, only after explicit user review and approval, routing it to a selected destination such as another project, chat, file, or connected database.
The goal is to let users think naturally in one conversation while safely routing confirmed information to the appropriate long-term destination. This would make ChatGPT more useful as a user-controlled external thinking and record-management system.
