Feature Request: Chat Lock/Protection to Prevent Accidental Deletions

I’d like to propose a feature that would greatly enhance the ChatGPT user experience: the ability to lock or protect chats to prevent accidental deletions. Currently, the delete function is simple and irreversible, which can lead to the unintentional loss of important chats or notes.

Proposed Solution:
Introduce a “lock” or “protect” feature for individual chats. When enabled, this feature would:

  1. Grey out the delete button for the protected chat.

  2. Require additional confirmation steps to delete, such as entering a passcode or confirming through a secondary authentication process.

Why This Matters:

For users like me, ChatGPT is a powerful tool for brainstorming, reflecting, and managing creative projects. Many chats contain important or deeply personal insights that I want to preserve. To reduce the risk of accidental deletion, I currently use naming strategies (e.g., including a lock emoji in the title) as a mental note to be cautious. However, a built-in locking feature would offer true protection and peace of mind.

Benefits

  1. Prevents loss of valuable data due to user error.

  2. Encourages confidence in using ChatGPT for long-term projects.

  3. Aligns with users’ needs for preserving work and intellectual property.

This small addition would make a big difference in usability and could be implemented alongside existing delete/archive options. Thank you for considering this suggestion.

i second that, but things have changed with the implementation of “projects”, it already allows to save chats indefinitely, give isolated custom instructions and files…

BUT:

  1. they don’t have a password protection, which they absolutely have to, especially combined with critical files and information.

  2. they are not really, or its not really clearly explained how much they are sandboxed, will they save critical client-informations into “memory”, do they have a isolated session for “memory”?. do they have higher data-privacy protection from OpenAI than other chats?

I concur as well. A main complaint I have (along with a situation I just happened upon earlier in the day) is that the UI for recently edited chats coming to the top of the list takes a long time (for me at least), making accidental archivations or deletions highly likely. An example would be deleting a chat one doesn’t need anymore, but let’s say someone edited an essential chat whilst the former process is ongoing, unknowingly clicks on the recently edited chat without checking the name, and Poof, it’s gone. Also, the Memory function can be inconsistent, making people who don’t regularly export information constantly at risk of deleting “unsaved” information.
