Please bring Canvas back to GPT-5.5, GPT-5.6 and future models, or provide a fully equivalent editing tool.
Writing blocks do not replace Canvas. Canvas offered highly useful controls for editing text precisely, including:
- Adjusting text length.
- Changing the reading level.
- Applying a final polish.
- Receiving inline suggestions.
- Editing specific sections while keeping the complete document visible.
- Iterating on a document without generating a new version in the conversation every time.
The current text-editing box is also far too small for working with anything beyond a very short passage. It displays only a small portion of the text and behaves like a single line that continues horizontally instead of wrapping the content into a properly sized editing area. This makes it very difficult to read, review and edit the complete text comfortably.
A professional text-editing tool should provide a sufficiently large, resizable area with proper line wrapping, so users can see the structure of the document and make precise changes without constantly scrolling horizontally.
These limitations make the current experience significantly less practical than Canvas for professional writing and document revision. Having to switch to an older model solely to access Canvas is not a satisfactory long-term solution, especially when that model may eventually be retired.
Please either restore Canvas in current models or add all of its editing controls and document-management capabilities to writing blocks.
Canvas was one of the most useful and differentiated tools in ChatGPT, and its removal represents a substantial loss of functionality for users who regularly edit professional texts.
