Feature Request: AI Teams for Custom GPTs & Projects

Hello OpenAI Team & Developer Community,

Hope you all are doing great.

Firstly, before I put my idea forward, I would like to thank the OpenAI Team and all those involved in the creation of ChatGPT for the extraordinary work they have done by creating this technology that is changing the world rapidly, towards the good and in an unimaginable way.

Thank you and utmost respect for doing this.

Now a little bit about myself. My name is Asif, and I work as a freelancer and virtual assistant for small and medium business owners, helping them improve their organizational, workflow, and digital structure.

With ChatGPT, it was love at first sight. I have been using it extensively (at least 10 hours a day) for more than a year now.

Recently, I got two premium accounts for different projects, and that is when I discovered the Projects feature. After using it for some time, I noticed a gap that Iā€™d like to discuss here.

Feature Request: AI Teams for Custom GPTs & Projects

Iā€™ve been using ChatGPTā€™s Projects feature, and while I havenā€™t fully explored Custom GPTs yet, I understand their purpose. Based on my experience, I see an opportunity to take both features further by introducing AI Teamsā€”a feature that allows users to create and manage multiple AI assistants with distinct roles.

What is AI Teams?

AI Teams would enable users to:

  • Assign predefined or custom AI assistants to projects.
  • Organize AI assistants into teams based on specific expertise (e.g., research, writing, coding, business strategy).
  • Seamlessly integrate AI Teams into projectsā€”so users donā€™t have to re-explain context every session.
  • Allow AI assistants to recognize their roles just by referring to them by name (e.g., ā€œNova, handle researchā€ / ā€œLyra, optimize this for SEOā€).
  • Work alongside Project-Specific Memory (Read Note at the post end), so AI Teams retain their roles and past interactions.

Why This Matters

Right now, Custom GPTs operate in isolation, and Projects donā€™t allow AI collaboration. AI Teams would bridge this gap by allowing users to:

  • Assign the right AI assistant for the right job.
  • Reduce repetitive explanations across different tasks.
  • Scale AI-driven workflows like an actual team setup.

Example Use Case

For a content marketing project, I could create a team with:

  • Nova ā€“ My general AI assistant for brainstorming.
  • Lyra ā€“ A content & SEO specialist.
  • Orion ā€“ An AI strategist providing automation insights, predictive marketing, and workflow optimization.
  • Vega ā€“ An AI analytics expert, providing insights on content performance, audience behavior, and engagement metrics.

With AI Teams + Project Memory, ChatGPT would evolve from a single-assistant tool into a full AI-powered workspace, where AI assistants work together like a real team with context that sticks.

Note: Project-Specific Memory

While sharing this idea, I came across another feature request in the forum for Project-Specific Memory. That post suggests enabling ChatGPT to maintain separate memory for different projects, allowing users to seamlessly continue where they left off without constantly reintroducing context.

This concept directly complements AI Teams. A structured memory system for projects would enhance the effectiveness of AI assistants, ensuring they not only retain past discussions but also remember their specific roles within each project. This would take AI-driven collaboration to a whole new levelā€”turning ChatGPT from a single assistant into an AI-powered, role-based workspace.

If youā€™re interested in that discussion, search for ā€˜Project-Specific Memory for Enhanced Workflowā€™ in the forumā€™s search bar. Itā€™s an important piece of the puzzle in building a more intelligent and context-aware AI collaboration system.

Final Thoughts

Iā€™d love to hear thoughts from the OpenAI team and the community. Would AI Teams + Project Memory together finally bridge the gap between Custom GPTs and real project collaboration?

Looking forward to the discussion!

Best,
Asif

Hello,

I do not use Instagram. Can we connect on some other platform?
