Subject: Feature Proposal – Advanced Chat Management, Conversation Splitting, Editing, and Knowledge Archiving
Dear OpenAI / ChatGPT Product Team,
I would like to suggest a set of features that I believe would significantly improve ChatGPT for users who use it for long-term professional work, research, legal matters, business projects, and document drafting.
As conversations become longer, a single chat can contain several unrelated subjects. Currently, it can become difficult to separate those subjects, remove irrelevant context, or preserve only the useful final results.
I suggest introducing the following features:
1. Split Part of a Conversation into a New Chat
Users should be able to select a group of messages within an existing conversation and choose:
“Move to New Chat” or “Create New Chat from Selection.”
The selected section would become a separate conversation with its own title, while the original conversation would retain only the relevant subject.
For example, a business conversation about an LOI may later contain a completely separate legal discussion. The user should be able to move the legal discussion into a new chat without deleting or losing the earlier business work.
2. Sections or Numbered Branches Within a Chat
Allow users to divide a long conversation into identifiable sections or branches, such as:
Chat/Section 1 – Commercial Documents
Chat/Section 2 – Legal Matters
Chat/Section 3 – Project Development
Users could later rename, separate, merge, archive, or move these sections.
3. Edit and Refine Previously Submitted Prompts
Users should be able to edit, add to, or remove part of a previously submitted question without having to rewrite the entire prompt.
Ideally, ChatGPT would maintain a version history so that the original prompt and subsequent revisions remain recoverable.
This would be especially useful when the user wants to clarify one condition, correct one fact, or emphasize a particular requirement while keeping the rest of a detailed prompt unchanged.
4. Convert Selected Research or Conversation Results into a Permanent File
Users should be able to select useful answers, research findings, tables, drafts, or other results and choose:
“Save as Document” / “Export Selected Results.”
The selected material could then be saved as a Word document, PDF, project file, or other persistent artifact with a user-defined title.
5. Archive Results and Remove the Working Discussion
After saving the useful results externally or into a project file, users should have the option to archive or remove the preliminary questions, unsuccessful drafts, research discussions, and other intermediate material from the active conversation.
This would allow the final knowledge to be preserved without keeping unnecessary conversational history in the active context.
6. “Keep Final Version Only”
For drafting workflows involving many revisions, users should be able to designate one answer or document as the “Final Version.”
ChatGPT could then archive earlier drafts while keeping the approved final version readily accessible.
7. User-Controlled Context Management
Users should be able to explicitly control which parts of a long conversation ChatGPT should use as context.
For example:
“Use Sections 1 and 3 for future responses, but exclude Section 2.”
This would be particularly valuable when a conversation contains confidential, outdated, unrelated, or superseded information.
8. Clear Separation Between Chat History, Saved Knowledge, and Memory
When content is moved, archived, deleted, or converted into a permanent document, the interface should clearly allow the user to decide whether that information should:
-
remain in the conversation;
-
be stored only in a document/project;
-
remain available as ChatGPT memory; or
-
be completely excluded from future context.
These capabilities would transform long ChatGPT conversations from simple chronological message histories into structured professional workspaces.
They would be especially valuable for users managing multiple business projects, contracts, research projects, legal matters, document drafting, and long-running professional discussions within ChatGPT.
Thank you for considering these suggestions. I believe advanced conversation management and user-controlled context could become an important part of ChatGPT’s evolution as a professional productivity and knowledge-management platform.
Kind regards,
Yassir Hassan Alnaeem
