Feature Request: Show timestamps for messages and make them available as conversation context
I would love to see timestamps added to ChatGPT conversations, similar to messaging apps like WhatsApp, Instagram or iMessage.
Why this would be useful
In long conversations that span several days or weeks, it’s often difficult to remember when something was said. Seeing the time (and date when appropriate) next to each message would make conversations much easier to follow.
For example:
- Friday, June 26
- 09:14 – “My Nintendo Switch 2 arrives today.”
- 13:52 – “It just arrived!”
- 16:07 – “I’ve been playing for a couple of hours.”
This alone would greatly improve the user experience.
Even better: let the model use this information
If ChatGPT could also receive the message timestamps as context, it could better understand the passage of time during a conversation.
Examples:
- “I just got home.” (2 hours after the previous message)
- “I can’t sleep.” (3:30 AM vs. 3:30 PM)
- “Yesterday my arm hurt a lot.”
- “I’ve been using it for two hours.”
Currently, the model often has to guess how much time has passed between messages. Having access to the actual timestamps would make conversations feel much more natural and improve continuity over long chats.
Privacy
This could simply be an optional setting that users can enable or disable if they want ChatGPT to use message timestamps for better context.
I think this would be a relatively small UI change with a significant impact on conversation quality.
Possible implementation
This feature could work in two independent ways:
- UI improvement
- Display the time next to each message (or reveal it on hover/click), similar to WhatsApp or Instagram.
- Optional conversation context
- Allow users to opt in so ChatGPT can use message timestamps as additional context.
- This would improve temporal reasoning without changing the conversation itself.
Users who don’t want this feature could simply leave it disabled.
Would anyone else find this useful for long-running conversations?
