Problem Statement
Currently, exporting data via Settings > Data Controls only supports downloading the entire account’s chat history as a single bulk .zip archive containing all past conversations.
For users who manage hundreds of active or long-term chats, this causes several issues:
-
Context Overload: When migrating a single long-running project or thread to a new session, users must manually locate and parse the specific chat within a massive
chat.htmlorconversations.jsonfile. -
Privacy & Security Concerns: Exporting an entire account’s chat history just to back up or reference one single project thread exposes unnecessary personal/work data across other topics.
-
Inconvenience: Preparing full-account data exports takes extra processing time compared to fetching a lightweight export for a single thread.
Proposed Solution
Add a native “Export Chat” option directly within the thread interface (e.g., in the thread’s ... options menu or next to the Share button), allowing users to download a single conversation thread.
Suggested Export Options for Single Threads:
-
Format Options: Download as
.txt,.md(Markdown),.docx, or structured.json. -
Include/Exclude Attachments: An option to include or exclude inline file outputs, generated code blocks, or images.
-
Bulk Selection (Optional): Ability to select specific threads from the sidebar to export together in a custom package.
Key Benefits
-
Allows users with hundreds of chats to easily back up, archive, or hand off individual long-running project threads into new sessions without pulling in unneeded account data.
-
Significantly improves workflow efficiency for power users managing large-scale document analysis, code generation, or case projects.
