Feature Request: A Separate, Linked Voice Transcript Layer for Cleaner Chat Histories

Hello OpenAI Team and Community,

I’d like to suggest an improvement to how ChatGPT organizes and preserves conversations conducted through Voice Mode, particularly for users who rely on voice interactions during extended work sessions.

The Problem

Long voice conversations naturally involve many intermediate exchanges, including clarifications, interruptions, corrections, follow-up questions, and informal responses.

While these interactions are important for maintaining context, displaying their entire text transcripts directly in the main chat timeline can make conversations unnecessarily long and difficult to navigate.

For example, a 45-minute voice discussion about software architecture might involve dozens of exchanges but ultimately produce just a few important decisions, a finalized design, and several action items.

Ideally, users should be able to find those meaningful results without scrolling through every intermediate spoken exchange.

Proposed Solution: A Separate but Linked Voice Transcript Layer

I propose introducing an optional Voice Transcript Layer that remains fully connected to the original conversation while being visually separated from its main timeline.

The experience could consist of two complementary views:

1. Main Conversation Timeline

A clean, organized view that prioritizes meaningful outcomes, including finalized answers, important decisions, generated content, diagrams, code, and action items.

2. Linked Voice Transcript

A separate, expandable view that preserves the complete text transcript of the voice interaction.

Users could access it directly from the original conversation whenever they need to review earlier discussions, recover details, or understand how a particular decision was reached.

Suggested Capabilities

  • Complete preservation: Keep the full voice transcript rather than deleting, discarding, or permanently replacing it with a summary.
  • Direct linkage: Maintain a clear relationship between transcript segments and the corresponding conversation outputs.
  • Flexible viewing: Allow users to switch between a clean conversation timeline and the complete chronological transcript.
  • Searchable history: Enable searching within voice transcripts to retrieve specific discussions and details.
  • Decision traceability: Allow important decisions and generated outputs to link back to the original exchanges that produced them.
  • Context continuity: Ensure that visually separating the transcript does not cause the AI to lose relevant conversational context, requirements, or corrections.

All transcript preservation should respect the user’s existing privacy and data-retention settings.

A Practical Example

Imagine discussing a software project with ChatGPT through Voice Mode for nearly an hour.

During the conversation, you explore several approaches, reject some options, revise requirements, and eventually agree on an architecture.

Instead of filling the main chat with every spoken exchange, the interface could prominently retain:

The final architecture, approved technical decisions, key requirements, and next steps.

Meanwhile, the entire voice discussion would remain accessible through an expandable View Voice Transcript option within that same conversation.

Users could revisit the original reasoning without sacrificing a clean and organized workspace.

The Key Principle

Separate how conversations are displayed from how their information is preserved.

This proposal is not about deleting transcripts, automatically discarding intermediate exchanges, or replacing complete discussions with potentially incomplete AI-generated summaries.

It is about improving the presentation of conversation history while preserving the information needed for continuity, transparency, and future reference.

Ideally, this would be an optional feature, allowing users to choose the viewing experience that best suits their workflow.

Why This Matters

As voice interaction becomes increasingly useful for programming, research, planning, and complex problem-solving, conversation history should evolve beyond a chronological collection of spoken exchanges.

A cleaner main timeline, combined with a fully preserved and accessible voice transcript, could make ChatGPT significantly more effective as a long-term collaborative workspace.

Thank you to the OpenAI team for your continued work on the Voice experience.

I’d be interested to hear whether other users would find this separation useful, particularly during extended voice sessions.
