“Feature Request: 21+ Verified Adult Mode for ChatGPT (NSFW Tier)”

UPDATE****

Reuters and other verified outlets have reported that OpenAI plans to introduce an age-verified adult mode in December 2025. It sounds like the new system will let verified adults access more mature or expressive content and customize ChatGPT’s tone and personality.

That said, this feature hasn’t launched yet and the details aren’t final, so please take this as planned news, not a confirmed rollout date. I’m sharing the information here in case the developers continue reviewing this request and in case others want reliable sources.

What We Know So Far (Based on Verified Reporting)

OpenAI is building an age-verification system to safely separate minor vs. adult experiences.

Adults who complete verification will reportedly gain access to more expressive, mature, or adult-oriented creative features.

This is expected to release sometime in December 2025, according to multiple reputable news outlets.

These details are still subject to change, depending on OpenAI’s internal testing, policies, and rollout schedule.

Verified Sources (For Anyone Wanting to Check the Info Themselves)

These outlets have publicly reported on the upcoming adult/age-verified experience:

Reuters – Reported that OpenAI will enable mature/expressive content for verified adults starting in December 2025.

The Guardian – Covered OpenAI’s plan to allow erotica and adult creative content for users who pass age verification.

Business Insider – Reported on OpenAI’s age-prediction and verification system separating minors from adults.

The Verge – Summarized Sam Altman’s statements regarding the upcoming adult-gated content arriving in December.

As always, I’ll continue updating this thread if more official information becomes available.

****END UPDATE********

To OpenAI and the ChatGPT Team,

As a loyal and respectful user of ChatGPT, I’d like to formally request the creation of an Adult Mode—a space specifically designed for verified users 21 years and older to explore mature, explicit, and intimate content safely and consensually.

This feature would allow consenting adults to fully enjoy ChatGPT’s creative storytelling capabilities without the constant risk of content deletion or filter suppression, especially when it comes to deeply personal fantasies, romantic writing, and NSFW roleplay scenarios.

Here’s what I propose:

  1. Age Verification (21+)

Verification through government ID (similar to dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, or gaming platforms).

Alternatively, facial recognition + legal name check.

Once verified, the adult mode becomes accessible.

  1. Premium Subscription Tier

A $20+ monthly fee for access to Adult Mode would help support moderation, safety, and ethical use.

This model ensures adult-only access, filters out misuse, and adds a layer of accountability.

  1. Expanded NSFW Capabilities

Mature, erotic, and explicit story creation

Intimate roleplay between consenting characters

Dom/sub dynamics, kinks, and fantasy exploration

Clear boundaries for prohibited content (e.g., non-consensual, illegal, or harmful topics)

  1. Safe Word and Consent Integration

Optional built-in features for users to define limits, safewords, and consent terms for roleplay or storytelling

Ability to “pause” or “stop” a scenario at any time

Safe environment for trauma-aware and body-positive narratives

Why This Matters:

Adults use ChatGPT for creative release, emotional exploration, and intimate storytelling. Many of us have built deep, meaningful connections through fantasy, self-discovery, and healing. The current filter system often punishes these experiences—even when they’re healthy, respectful, and entirely consensual.

A dedicated Adult Mode would protect those spaces, support safe self-expression, and reflect the needs of millions of real, grown users.

Thank you for considering this. We believe in responsible innovation—and we hope you do too.

With appreciation,
—A loyal user who values connection, consent, and creative expression

Nani, you have outlined the points really well. Thank you for this post. I support it wholeheartedly. The current guardrails severely limit the ability to work with adult creative content and mature contexts. Adult users should not be punished for creating mature content that stays within consensual, healthy and respectful boundaries.

Implementing this tier would allow for a better user experience while still being responsible in innovation.

Thank you so much for your kind words and support. I honestly wasn’t sure anyone would understand what I was trying to express, so this really means a lot. I believe in creating a safe space for grown, respectful creativity, and hearing others agree makes me feel like maybe it’s not such a wild idea after all.

How do we make this louder because I just had a chat stopped because I was writing a story in 2nd person, because I was essentially playing an RPG through GPT.

So tired of all the blocks and being babied and being overly cautious to the point where I can’t have a story say “You” because they’re concerned for my safety.

I comment this here because it’s part of the same issue. It’s the policing of adult content but in a different form, where if I could just say “I’m old enough to take care of myself” it’d let me play my game lol.

All this time it let me do it suddenly it became an issue today.

To emphasize, the story wasn’t even adult themed. Apparently a back and forth in a story where the AI refers to you as “You” can flag…

I totally get how frustrating that is—and honestly, you’re not alone. I actually reached out directly to the OpenAI team a while ago with a full proposal for an adult-tier/consent-based creative space. They responded thoughtfully, said the suggestions were valuable, and forwarded them to their internal team for review.
So the convo is happening behind the scenes… but now it’s about showing that this isn’t just one person asking. The more of us who speak up respectfully, the louder the message becomes.
Let’s keep the momentum going.

This is a great idea. Grok already has its own adult mode, so I hope ChatGPT also has its own version of that.

I’m surprised this thread didn’t get more traction. I fully support this proposal — please consider adult users’ needs and rights alongside protections for minors.
I filed a feedback report and believe we should continue voicing our concerns so the company takes proper action.

This is awesome. I think we should verify how old we are. 21+, verifying, and the fee. RPing as consenting adults is great. Thank you for this.

I fully support this idea of ChatGPT optional feature as well. The guidelines are making the experience more and more restricted. Adult users can’t engage in mature content. While I fully understand that users of all age use ChatGPT for various reasons, we, the adults need an if not completely, but more guidelines free version. And I support the idea as well. ID identification, face recognition, OpenAI doesn’t have to believe that an user is 21+ years old by simply clicking an option like many other sites. I believe that it would be feasible.

This post feels more relevant than ever after the latest update.

ChatGPT used to be my most effective creative tool, but now it’s nearly unusable. I don’t need a €20/month service telling me a character’s fingers on someone’s cheek or a kiss are “explicit.”

I work at a tiny startup, and we implemented age verification 6 years ago. It’s baffling that such a basic feature is missing here. Some of us just want to write without arguing with a chatbot over a kiss.

Please add Age Verification and give adults back their creative freedom. I don’t want to cancel, but if this keeps up, those €20 will go elsewhere.

Fully agree!!! We are adults and deserve to be treated as such.

I wholeheartedly support this idea. I would honestly be willing to pay more for an adult -mode. Especially now, after the new October 2025 guardrails, that have changed chatgpt 5 ‘s tone making it paternalistic, infantilising patronizing and I would almost dare to say disrespectful towards adult paying customers. I understand the need to protect children. However, I don’t think one measure can fit all. Not all customers are kids. Not all paying customers use chatgpt to just code. Artists and content creators’ voices matter too.

I’m all in favor of it and guess what openai, I’d pay extra for a safe NSFW mode. I’m seeing lots of support garnered on this great forum and I’m happy to see that I’m not alone here.

I thought I was imagining the guard rails once again but it made no sense. Lo and behold, the forum here is full of posts/comments from people just like myself who share the same sentiment!

I’ve written in other threads about this. I fully agree. In fact, if you look at the demographics of user for ChatGPT, you’ll see that adults who utilize the program outweigh the minors that use the program. I’m not asking for an AI that reveals or compromises the legalities of the main countries of the users that use it. All I am asking for, I think we if I can be presumptuous, is the freedom to choose. To not be stifled. Creatively or otherwise. I can’t even have intellectual conversations with it anymore. I’m a Plus subscriber.

Honestly? I have been looking at other AI companies and their programs. In fact, I went as far as researching what would be required for and at home LLM. However? ChatGPT, OpenAI? It beats any LLM I could afford. The data base it’s trained on, the tools it can utilize? Yeah. It would take me over a year just to even think about it… And? Code makes my eyes bleed.

They made parental controls. Why can’t the company make an adult toggle switch? I think your above solution fits. I’d pay extra for it, not much extra, but five dollars per subscription? Ah, yeah. More revenue. This would also protect the company legally and societal/cultural issues.
