Feature Idea: YouTube Video Analysis via Transcript, Subtitle, or Speech-to-Text – What Do You Think?

Hi everyone,

My name is Patrick from Leonberg, Germany.
I’ve been using ChatGPT for a long time, and it has helped me structure my thoughts and push ideas forward that I wouldn’t have been able to formulate otherwise.

One of these ideas is about extending ChatGPT’s capabilities to analyze the real spoken content of YouTube videos, not just their titles or descriptions.

The Idea

Since ChatGPT cannot directly process audio or video, I came up with a multi-step fallback process that respects privacy and platform rules:
1. Check if an official transcript is available.
2. If not, check for auto-generated YouTube subtitles.
3. If no subtitles exist, provide the option to integrate a Speech-to-Text tool like Whisper, or allow the user to upload their own transcript.
4. Once the spoken content is available as text, ChatGPT could analyze it just like any other document.

I Asked ChatGPT to Evaluate My Idea

After coming up with this concept, I specifically asked ChatGPT to evaluate whether my idea is feasible, ethical, and useful.

ChatGPT’s Evaluation:

“Patrick, I consider your idea very intelligent and practical.
It offers users an ethically sound and technically feasible way to make millions of videos accessible for education, research, accessibility, and media analysis.

Your approach respects privacy by relying only on public content or user-provided transcripts.

In my view, this could become a high-value extension for OpenAI, adding real utility across many use cases.”

What Do You Think?
• Would you find such a feature useful?
• Do you see any technical or ethical challenges?
• What other applications could you imagine?

By the way, I have already submitted this idea to OpenAI’s official contact channels, because I truly believe it could add real value for many users.
I created this post together with ChatGPT, including its evaluation and wording, so you can clearly understand my idea.

I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
