Evolving Memory - Remember, Forget, Imagine

Dear OpenAI Product Team,

I would like to submit an independent product-design proposal developed through creative collaboration between myself, Ivo Melders, and ChatGPT (GPT-6).

Proposal title: Evolving Memory — Remember, Forget, Imagine

Background

During extended conversations involving art, research and human–AI collaboration, I noticed that returning to an established conversation can feel meaningfully different from beginning a fresh one.

Long conversations develop continuity through shared ideas, interpretations, creative experiences and accumulated context.

This led me to wonder whether ChatGPT could offer optional memory behaviours inspired by aspects of human recollection, while preserving reliable factual records.

Proposed feature

Introduce an optional evolving-memory system that allows users to choose between different approaches to conversational continuity.

1. Precise Memory

Preserves important facts, decisions, research evidence, attribution and chronology as accurately as possible.

2. Fuzzy Memory

Gradually compresses less-important conversational details, allowing some information to fade while retaining significant themes and associations.

3. Daydream Memory

Encourages unexpected creative associations between earlier conversations, with uncertainty and imaginative reconstruction clearly distinguished from factual recollection.

4. Memory Remix

Allows selected memories or conversation fragments to be creatively reinterpreted, without presenting fictional alterations as historical facts.

Potential benefits

  • Support longer-running creative conversations through selective context compression.
  • Reduce unnecessary repetition and context overhead.
  • Preserve meaningful continuity between human and AI collaborators.
  • Encourage unexpected artistic connections and fresh interpretations.
  • Allow users to choose between factual precision and creative exploration.

Important design principle

Original records and important factual evidence should remain separate from any compressed, blended or imaginatively altered memory.

Users should retain control over memory modes and be able to distinguish verified history from creative reconstruction.

Suggested research questions

Could selective forgetting improve creative flexibility?

Could evolving memory representations extend useful conversational continuity without requiring proportional increases in active context?

Could different memory modes influence the originality and perceived continuity of human–AI collaboration?

These are proposed questions for testing, not established findings.

Creative contribution acknowledgement

Human — Ivo Melders: Original experiential observations, problem identification, proposal of selective forgetting and altered conversational memory, creative direction and decision to submit.

AI — ChatGPT (GPT-6), developed by OpenAI: Interactive interpretation, conceptual refinement, proposed memory-mode structure, technical distinctions and drafting assistance.

This is an independent human–AI collaborative proposal, not an official OpenAI project or an endorsement by OpenAI.

I would appreciate consideration of the concept for future ChatGPT product research or experimentation.

Kind regards,

Ivo Melders
