Check out Ollama, probably one of the most popular open-source local LLM backends. I recommend OpenWebUI as the frontend.
Installing these two will give you a ChatGPT-esque webapp running fully locally on your PC without needing any internet access. You can install uncensored models, smart models, image generation models, anything you can think of.

I see. Thanks for the info. But it still doesn’t, because it’s much more general than that. There are concerns about where information goes, which have been raised often with the DeepSeek system, for example. But in the last days, we’ve had Elon Musk - the guy who has barged into US Government Department offices and apparently downloaded all private data from citizens onto an AI system and proceeded to use it to process their data (who knows what he will do with it in the future) hoping to buy OpenAI (or some part of it). I am neither a US citizen, nor do I live in the USA, but it throws into sharp relief to me that evaluations of who we trust with our data today may not be who has their dirty hands on our data tomorrow.
It’s not just about me and my situation. It’s not just about information of one’s own research. To be part of society, we have to share personal information (eg. for official purposes), other personal information we may have chosen to share in the past before AI was ever a thing (eg. on social media). And we may benefit from continuing to use services in the future even while we know about AI, to avoid foregoing opportunities if we don’t.
In any case, there’s the ethics around AI training; the ethics around keeping User data secure; the practical protection from what we used to call the ‘combinatorial explosion’: it’s all a busted flush now, because none of our data is permanently secured by a Terms of Service contract or anything else.

Well, that’s an ethical issue. Because there is legislation which requires our privacy. There is a privacy policy on every website which tells us what our rights are. There are terms and conditions which make a contract between us and each website.
Your view seems to be that we have no right to expect any of these to be honoured.
The example I gave with Musk is certainly that they are not honoured: the laws and protections and guarantees are trampled on. In the case of the US House they are apparently not even shocked by it let alone engaged in doing something about it. The courts are being laughed at.
As mentioned, I am European, and European law on data privacy (GDPR). In the USA, legal protections vary state-by-state. But let’s say Musk had done what he did in the EU. The government agencies would be in-line for criminal sanctions, including up to 5-years in prison for offending individuals within those organisations. If Musk’s arm of data thugs had been collected from around Twitter/SpaceX/Tesla and the AI infrastructure for analysing the stolen data was X-AI, all of those organisations would be in-line for a fine of up to 4% of their global income; participants in criminal behaviour would face jail of up to 5 years. Under GDPR it wouldn’t make any difference if a corrupt office holder (eg. Trump) had given permission. And victims wouldn’t have to go to great lengths… the EU would take the action…, without a doubt they would take the action, considering how much revenue it would raise!
So in Europe, I don’t think expecting “any kind of privacy in our day and age you are living a dream”. Meta, Amazon and Wattsapp have all been fined between hundreds of millions and over a billion Euros under GDPR already. But I do have a worry about the data we share with US companies.

My only real ethical concern is moderation outside of what is needed. Not helping someone build a bomb is needed moderation. Refusing to answer political or religious questions is censorship, or worse, cowtowing to media and special interests.
I also advocate for Midjourney’s take on IP; leave it up to the end-user to suffer the penalties. Disney isn’t suing me for drawing Micky Mouse unless I use it to sell shirts or post it’s IP doing something awful.

We’re not marching in the right direction. The communists ask: don’t we just seize the means of production from the few for the many? Not sure, not sure… But if the opposite call is a kind of slavery or near speciecide, why not? Unless there’s a better way to have AI and be a whole humanity too… Doesn’t feel like UBI is the solution because then the cost of maintaining AI and technology is subtracted from the payment, but it is not made up for by work humanity pays into the system.
