Error in transcribing my voice memo's causing me to lose minutes of data

Hi,

So about a month ago I started using ChatGPT’s voice recording function to have it transcribe what I’m saying as a way of getting my thoughts out, rather than having to type everything. I’ve been running into a certain bug almost straight away though, which makes this function almost unusable.

A lot of the times, my minutes of talking just get lost due to the message “network error” as soon as I hit “stop record”. Sometimes it works when I click “try again”, but a lot of the times the recording just disappears. A workaround for this is for me to simultanously record on a seperate device, so that I can playback what I just tried to record and basically have ChatGPT record that recording and hope for the best. There’s times where I have had to do this up to three times for 1 specific recording.

The chances of this bug happening get higher the longer my recordings get. This already starts happening more frequently from 3 minutes onward though, which isn’t very long in my opinion and I basically don’t even want to test out 5+ minute recordings, since I am afraid it’ll get lost anyway.

I am using an Android device, which I think is important to add, cause a friend of mine is using ChatGPT for the same thing and has an iPhone and so far HAS NOT ran into this issue yet. And I mean not even one single time. He can record up to 10 minutes and there’s never been an issue. I believe his only stops recording at 10 minutes, but it transcribes everything with no problem.

Has anyone else ran into this issue yet? Perhaps it’s an Android thing? I have it on both my Samsung Ultra s23 and Samsung Tablet S10 Ultra, which makes me believe it’s an Android thing. Again, it can’t be a coincidence that my friend literally has more than 10+ hours of recording and never ran into this issue.

Any help would be much appreciated, cause I really want to use this function as such, but due to this bug it makes it almost impossible.

Thanks in advance!

No one else experiencing this?

Just lost a 14 minute recording and in a brilliant flow. This happens to me so many flipping times! Please can it be sorted.

I’ve lost valuable content due to this issue.

To improve transcription success, keep recordings under 4 minutes. In the latest updates, you can continue recording even if the initial transcription appears in the text field. I stop before 4 minutes, then press the mic button again.

Shorter recordings increase the chances of successful transcription. Recordings over 4 minutes rarely transcribe properly.

Thankyou for calling this out, i too suffer from this, even on the website version. It’s incredibly frustrating loosing the ability to re-try the transcribe option later. Even with a solid internet connection, if open ai is under load you have a very high likely hood of loosing the audio recording with no warning apart from “network error” previously we could retry this.

Please fix this issue! It keeps happening to me.

Same issue occuring on my end. Appears to be a wider problem. My partner has the same problem on her device & account.

Same here.
That function was broken for me, for quiet some time, but it turned worse and worse.

In the start it happend if I talk for longer than 50 seconds.
So I found a woraround by hitting the pause button in time. So I was able to talk another 50 secs, hit pause and talk another 50 secs and so on.

then they removed the pause button LOL

Not only can´t I check the text for missheared words anymore. I can not pause it to not get the “connection error” message and lose everything I just said but the time for breaking shortened. Now it gets the “connection error” if I talk for longer than 20 seconds.

And then a new update caused new problems with that function.
If the chat is part of a project, then the function does not stop listening. It never sends. (except for the first message after entering the chat. That works. But no second message, except I exit and re-enter the chat)

I already found a new workaround. I use a third party tool. The google voice to text tool in my keyboard app. But that one misshears words extremely often compared to ChatGPT voice to text. :frowning:

This is my absolute biggest pain point with ChatGPT. Also on an android. The fear of losing my train of thought audio prevents me from using the transcribe feature.
