Enhance ChatGPT Projects for Large-Scale Development and Documentation

ChatGPT Projects are already an excellent way to organize work. However, as projects grow over weeks or months, they become increasingly difficult to manage.

This is especially true for software development, research, documentation, engineering projects, knowledge bases, and other long-term work.

Users often end up with dozens or even hundreds of chats and documents, making it difficult to find information quickly.

Current Limitations

Currently, projects provide a collection of chats and uploaded files, but they offer only limited tools for organizing larger amounts of information.

As projects grow, users spend more time searching than working.

Proposed Improvements

:file_folder: Project Organization

  • Folder structure inside projects
  • Nested folders
  • Drag & Drop organization
  • Tags for chats and documents
  • Favorites / pinned items

:books: Documentation

  • Built-in documentation pages
  • Wiki-style pages
  • Documentation templates
  • Automatic table of contents
  • Rich text formatting

:magnifying_glass_tilted_left: Search & Navigation

  • Search only inside the current project
  • Filter by tags
  • Filter by document type
  • Better navigation between chats and documents

:brain: Knowledge Management

  • Link chats to documents
  • Link documents together
  • Cross references
  • Visual Project Map showing relationships between documents and chats

:robot: AI-assisted Organization

One feature that would make ChatGPT unique compared to traditional note-taking tools would be AI-assisted project organization.

Examples:

  • Suggest moving chats into folders
  • Suggest tags automatically
  • Detect duplicate information
  • Suggest merging related chats
  • Build and maintain a project knowledge structure automatically

:three_o_clock: Version Management

  • Version history for project documents
  • Restore previous versions
  • Show recently modified documents

Benefits

These improvements would make ChatGPT Projects much more suitable for long-term work, including:

  • Software development
  • Documentation
  • Research
  • Engineering projects
  • Knowledge bases
  • Learning
  • Personal projects
  • Hobby projects

Users could keep far more of their work inside ChatGPT instead of relying on multiple external tools.

Example

Imagine a software project after several months:

  • 150+ chats
  • 80 documents
  • Technical specifications
  • Design decisions
  • Source code
  • Meeting notes
  • Documentation

With folders, tags, AI-assisted organization, wiki pages, project maps, and better search, all of this information could remain inside a single ChatGPT Project while staying easy to navigate.

Why this matters

ChatGPT is evolving beyond a chatbot.

For many users, it has become a workspace for thinking, planning, documenting, learning, and building long-term projects.

Providing stronger project management capabilities would make ChatGPT an even more powerful platform for individuals, teams, and professional users.

Thanks for putting this together, @BlueHorizon. This is a really thoughtful feature request, and I can see why larger Projects become harder to manage over time.

The ideas around folders, tags, better search, documentation, knowledge linking, AI-assisted organization, and version history all point toward the same goal: making ChatGPT Projects scale better for long-term work instead of just collecting chats and files.

I've shared this with our team so it can be logged as feature feedback and considered alongside other requests in this area. Feedback like this, especially with clear use cases and examples, is always helpful.
