Customizable Project Icons for a More Personal and Efficient ChatGPT & Codex Experience

Dear OpenAI Team,

First of all, thank you for continuously improving ChatGPT and Codex and making these products an increasingly important part of our daily lives.

I would like to share a small but potentially meaningful product enhancement idea that could improve the overall user experience, particularly for people who manage multiple projects.

The idea: Customizable project icons and visual project navigation.

As someone who regularly works across numerous projects, I find that navigating through a long list of project folders can become increasingly time-consuming.

While project names provide the necessary information, having a distinctive visual identity for each project would make it much easier to recognize, locate, and switch between different workspaces.

I appreciate that ChatGPT already offers icon and color selection for projects. My suggestion is to expand these personalization capabilities and introduce a consistent experience across both ChatGPT and Codex.

For example, users could assign different icons to their projects based on their purpose, such as software development, business strategy, research, finance, personal activities, or any other category relevant to their work.

A more advanced version could also allow users to upload their own project icons, use predefined icon libraries, or create visually distinct project groups.

The goal is simple: Make project navigation faster, more intuitive, and more personal.

Beyond aesthetics, I believe such an improvement could offer several practical benefits.

Users managing many projects could identify their workspaces at a glance instead of repeatedly reading through project names.

Distinctive icons could also help users avoid accidentally opening or working in the wrong project, particularly when managing multiple development environments or similarly named projects.

And perhaps most importantly, this would give users another opportunity to make ChatGPT and Codex feel like their own personalized working environments.

My broader perspective

I believe artificial intelligence is evolving beyond being just another digital tool.

For many of us, it is gradually becoming something much more fundamental: a personal operating system for our work, productivity, knowledge, creativity, and everyday lives.

As AI platforms become more deeply integrated into our routines, personalization and usability will play an increasingly important role in how naturally we interact with them.

Sometimes, even the smallest interface improvements can make a significant difference in the overall user experience.

Allowing people to organize their digital workspaces in a more visual and personal way is one of those improvements.

It is not necessarily a major technical innovation, but it is the kind of thoughtful product refinement that could make everyday interaction with ChatGPT and Codex noticeably more enjoyable and efficient.

I would be delighted to see OpenAI continue developing these products not only as powerful AI systems but also as highly personalized environments that people genuinely enjoy using every day.

Dear OpenAI Team, what do you think?

Wouldn’t it be nice to give our projects their own visual identities and make navigating between them a little easier?

I would be happy to see this idea considered for a future product update.

Thank you for your time, your work, and your continued commitment to improving the AI experience.
