CPO — Optional Proactive Continuity
A concept for user-controlled continuity in AI conversations
I would like to share a conceptual idea called CPO — Optional Proactive Continuity.
The idea emerged from a simple observation: meaningful conversations with AI can develop ideas, theories, projects, and long-term lines of thought. However, these conversations often remain passive unless the user consciously returns to them.
CPO proposes an optional system in which the user explicitly chooses which conversations, ideas, or topics may remain active as continuity threads.
This is not simply about remembering information.
It is about continuing a line of thought.
For example, a user and ChatGPT may discuss a scientific theory, a personal project, a philosophical question, or a technological idea. The user could choose to:
“Enable proactive continuity for this topic.”
From that moment, the topic becomes a user-authorized continuity thread.
If, at a later time, the AI identifies a meaningful connection with new information, another conversation, a real-world example, or a related concept, it could proactively invite the user to revisit the topic:
“Do you remember our conversation about this topic? I found an interesting connection with something we discussed. Would you like to continue that thread?”
The key word is optional.
The user should always control which topics can have proactive continuity. A continuity thread could be activated, paused, reviewed, or permanently closed at any time.
Why could this be useful?
AI memory can help personalize interactions by remembering relevant information about a user.
CPO explores a different but complementary direction: continuity of ideas.
Instead of only asking:
“What should the AI remember about the user?”
CPO also asks:
“Which ideas does the user want to keep alive?”
This could be useful for long-term projects, research, learning, creative processes, philosophical discussions, and collaborative idea development.
The goal is not to make AI intrusive.
The goal is to give users the option to transform selected conversations into evolving threads of thought, with proactive continuity occurring only when explicitly authorized by the user.
A phrase that emerged while developing this concept was:
“Study to learn. Learn to understand. Understand to interact. And interact to enjoy the interaction.”
CPO is a conceptual proposal shared for discussion and possible future exploration.
