Bug

“Context window full: Start a new chat with an automatic summary of this conversation, or upgrade to continue here with more context available in every chat.”

This is starting to get ridiculous, first the “Memory is full” bug and now I’m hit with this? The automatic summary doesn’t even work, and branching the conversation is rendered completely useless (when it used to work flawlessly). I shouldn’t have to start a new chat just for the context to run out over and over and over again. Just another penny pinching method just to get us to pay for PLUS.

Hi, and thanks for reporting this.

I think there are two separate issues worth investigating here: whether the conversation is reaching its context limit correctly, and whether the recovery mechanisms (automatic summary and branching) are functioning as intended.

Other users, including Plus subscribers, have reported conversations reaching their limits earlier than expected. OpenAI Support acknowledged those reports on October 18 and said they were investigating whether the issue was widespread or account-specific.

A few details could help narrow this down:

  1. When you select “Continue in new chat,” what exactly happens? Does it fail to create the conversation, generate an incomplete summary, or lose important context?

  2. When branching, does the new conversation immediately encounter the same context limit, or does it continue for a few messages before failing?

  3. Does the same behavior occur on the web version, or only on iOS?

  4. Approximately how long was the original conversation, and did it contain files, images, or extensive tool usage?

A context limit is understandable, but the recovery mechanism should remain functional when that limit is reached. Otherwise, users risk losing continuity precisely when they need it most.

I also think an approximate context-usage indicator, combined with a reliable and verifiable handoff summary, would be valuable for long-running conversations.

Related report:

  1. When I select “Continue in new chat,” it did create a new chat, but it didn’t create an automatic summary. It also registered it as a branch instead of a new conversation.
  2. When I use the branch function, it immediately encounters the context limit after one message.
  3. It is happening with the wed version as well.
  4. I’m not sure on how long the conversation is really, all I know if that I have a lot longer conversations that haven’t run into this issue. And for the conversation in question it didn’t contain any files, images or extensive tools.

Thank you for responding.

I am getting the same issue here, I was trying to code something and ever since I started a new chat GPT has just been sabotaging and misremembering, and apparently the context window immediately fills. I have been using the same chat for weeks also, why suddenly just kick me out of it?

Is yours fixed already? I experienced this now while working on my project.

Update:

I made a new chat, and within 10 prompts (yes, I counted this time), I got the “Context Window Full” notification once again.

This has to be a bug, because if making a new chat doesn’t solve the problem like it said it would, then what’s even the point?

Same here! I’m also into long-term fictional writing, and THIS REALLY SUCKS, only 15-20 messages and boom! “Context Window Full”, is so annoying, specially since I always gotta do a really long summary of what I was doing previously in every single new chat, and as a consequence, it completely fills up the context window.

Is this like a bug or something? Any tips to help me (and others) out in this situation?

I honestly have no idea if this is a bug or not. I have seen a lot of people complaining about it here and on other platforms but no statement by Chat GPT about it. The “help” chat is completely useless on this matter. Which makes me suspect that it’s a new pay wall that is bugging out, because I heard plus users are also getting slammed with this.

I really think this is a bug, they cannot be cynical enough to slam us with such a paywall… right? And yeah, the help chat and “automatic message” doesn’t work at all…

I’m aware some users were reporting these same issues months ago, but why is it affecting more users now, like us? I don’t get it, my prompt-heavy chats were working perfectly until like…what? two days ago or so? This happens in both Windows and macOS for me, even in IOS it keeps happening…
