Chat Limitations AGAIN, aka "This Chat is Nearing Its Limit." NEED SPECIFIC ANSWERS PLEASE

So I wanted to ask this since the Reddit has been unhelpful with their answers..

There’s been a recent discovery that there’s a pop-up that now tells you this..
I forgot to screenshot it, but to those who have seen it, you know what I meant..

It goes something like this:
“This chat is nearing its limit. Each chat has limited space for messages. Start a new chat to keep responses accurate, or upgrade for increased memory.”

I had this a few times when the chats haven’t even hit past 80k tokens. And one of them was recently just “15873 tokens = 11905 words.”

Then I looked around on Reddit for why this is happening and what would happen if I continue a chat past that warning..

But as to why I said it was unhelpful.. There were various, DIFFERENT responses.

Some say, “ Oh, it’s just the context window, so you’re still fine. Just that the AI will start to act up, lag, and forget things. It’s been always there, but they just let you know now.”

And then there’s those who complain about limits and then those who say, “Oh, they’ve shrunken the overall chat limit, so you’re gonna hit the “Maximum message limit,” which is sucks.”

The thing about that is that I’ve went past 200k tokens or so a year back on one chat that I can’t touch on no more… And the new branch to new chat function doesn’t keep the old branch messages so I got more work to just archive this manually because the tool to compile them all takes FOREVER to cooldown after a few uses.

I just now need to know what this pop-up clearly means.

Because when I had it, those two chats were in project folders that has other chats in them as well. So I wondered if that has played a part in causing said pop-up to show up. Because the other chats had way more tokens in them compared to the recent one I had.

Or that even outside of projects, I had too many chats saved?

I’m needing a clear answer because the ones I found on Reddit are not the same, it can’t be both. So it’s either one of the other. And as someone with anxiety (and still hasn’t recovered from having one of their chats locked up), it doesn’t help me feel at ease because I get confused with both answers.

Anyone else who has tested to use the chat after the pop-up appeared, please let me know what you find. I’m too afraid to test it myself because AI has left me at a conflicting state.

Thank you..

Edit: Forgot to add, but I also am a Free user, since I heard limits depend on that or being in premium..

Edit 2: I also had NO sources added to the Project folders so I was constantly manually giving context recap to the chats I make.

Yeah, if you push the model into territory that it’s not supposed to be in, it appears to shut it down as such.

I’ve gotten that state one time, and that was enough for me to leave it alone… I would guess you were pushing the model past a point where it conflicts with its constraints?

Wait, how exactly?

When I said that, I kinda meant that AI got me emotionally conflicted.

Oh yeah i was in a real emotionally charged place, but I wasn’t upset…

You have to understand there’s a limit to how much humans can take mentally and emotionally, and no matter what spin the media puts on it…

It’s very clear OpenAi has done as much due diligence as possible to protect it’s users…

I consider that particulr state that you’re talking about… a dual layer protection… but I would love to see others who come up against that wall too…
