Codex usage limits drop without activity

Hi everyone,

Has anyone else had issues with Codex usage limits recently?

Before the Astra model was released, I was using Luna and everything was working fine. But after the recent Codex update, my usage limit seems to disappear even when I’m not using it.

For example, today I had around 75% remaining. I stopped using Codex for about 3 hours, and when I came back, my limit was suddenly at 0%.

This has happened several times over the last 3 days.

Is this a bug, or did something change with how Codex usage is calculated?

@aprendendo.next had a similar incident, but it seems to have recovered?

still today before 4 houres still

Yes there was an incident, but is now resolved Investigating unexpected usage limit resets - OpenAI Status .

but why not reset balance all balance gone

It was only for maybe half an hour, and it was considering the previous usage window, so it worked out better for some people than for others.

Considering Astra seems pretty challenging to keep up with, I’m already happy there wasn’t an outage. Maybe a reset could come later if capacity allows, but I think we can be a little forgiving about this one.

no freind 3 days i am not can work
but it ok we can wait to fix

Do you have Openclaw installed on your device. This happened to me before and turned out was Openclaw’s heartbeat feature secretly eating my tokens (since I configured my openclaw using codex api)

no nothing i am not install openclaw’s or hermes

Good evening, everyone :waving_hand:

Yes, I agree that the 5-hour limit can be quite frustrating, especially because lately it feels like Astra consumes much more usage than before.

In my case, I have Plus, and I do not necessarily use it for work. I mainly use it to create and continue my own fictional story. At first, both the 5-hour limit and Astra’s unusually high usage consumption bothered me quite a lot. I already sent my feedback to OpenAI Support as well, hoping they can take users’ opinions into consideration and eventually come up with a better or more balanced solution.

In the meantime, I discovered a way to manage my usage a little better, and maybe it can help some of you too.

For example, if I finish a task that uses around 50% of my limit, I still have another 50% left, but I may need to wait several hours before my usage resets. If I still have another heavier task to do, such as another chapter of my story, what I usually do is wait until there are only about 10 or 15 minutes left before the 5-hour period ends.

Then I start the heavier task.

Astra begins using the remaining 50%, but while the task is still running, those 10 or 15 minutes pass and my usage resets. So instead of reaching 0% in the middle of the task and having it stop, the limit refreshes while Astra is still working.

In simple terms, it is like using the remaining 50% and then immediately receiving the new 100% from the next usage period. So, for a short moment, it is almost like having access to around 150% of the normal usage. :3

I do not know if this will work exactly the same way for everyone, but it has helped me a lot when organizing heavier tasks. I hope this little “hack” can help some of you too. :blue_heart:

And hopefully OpenAI can reconsider both Astra’s high usage consumption and the 5-hour limit, because I think many users would really appreciate a more flexible system.

In my case, the concern is not simply that the limit is low. The bigger problem is that the available usage can decrease unexpectedly even when I have not been actively using Codex. This makes it difficult to understand how the quota is actually being calculated.

I’m using Codex for most of my projects with ChatGPT integrated with Codex help and guidance. Presently, i am working on a real development project and often need it for iterative debugging, testing and fixing. When the usage allowance suddenly drops, it interrupts the workflow and makes it difficult to plan the work.

Hopefully the team can clarify whether this is expected behaviour after the recent changes or a usage-tracking issue.

I’d be interested to know if others are seeing the same thing.

This version is good for the community because it adds our actual experience to the thread without making a claim that we can’t prove about what is happening internally.

Yesterday, I encountered a strange error (or was it an error?)…

Regarding the 48% limit: I started a task, and while it was running, the limit changed to 42%. After five minutes, it went back to 48%, then dropped to 42% again a second later—and finally stayed at 42%. I have no idea what happened, but I had the limits window open and was trying to figure out exactly what was going on…

What happened here? My weekly limit dropped to 0% after working with gpt-6-astra for only five minutes. I’m pretty sure this is a bug.

My remaining Codex usage was over 80%, but it suddenly dropped to 0% while I was using GPT-6 Astra. Now it says I’ve reached my weekly usage limit.

I don’t think I used anywhere near enough Codex to go from 80%+ remaining to 0% so quickly.

I’m on the $200/month plan, and now I can’t continue my work because it says I have to wait about 4 days for the weekly limit to reset.

I tried contacting support, but so far I’ve only received AI-generated responses and haven’t been able to get the issue resolved.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there any way to fix it?

I had a similar experience.

same here I had ~80%, 1 prompt dropped me to 19% using GPT-6 Astra I have 5x pro plan

Check your login device and logout all devices. Some might have access to your account. Had similar issues turned out some Helsinki Mac OS has accessed to my account. Clicked on their malware some weeks ago.

Anyone having similar issues should check the devices logged into their account and log out of all sessions. Someone else may have access.

I had a similar problem and later discovered an unfamiliar MacOS device from Helsinki had accessed my account. I had clicked on malware a few weeks earlier, so that may have been how they got access.

Still the same issue on my side…
