Dear OpenAI Team and community,
I’d like clarification on how project-wide instructions are designed to function across multiple chats in a project.
Observed Behavior:
When I modify project-wide instructions, older chats retain the previous version instead of updating to the latest instructions.
If I manually ask ChatGPT to fetch the latest project instructions in an old chat, it updates within that specific chat but does not update globally across all chats.
This leads to inconsistencies where new chats use the latest instructions, but older chats remain outdated.
My Questions:
• Is this expected behavior, or should all chats within a project always use the latest project-wide instructions?
• If this is intentional, could there be a way to give users control over whether old chats update or retain previous instructions?
Suggested Solution:
To improve flexibility, consider adding:
A checkbox or radio button option allowing users to choose whether a chat should follow project-wide instructions dynamically or keep the instructions from when the chat was created.
A warning message when project-wide instructions are modified, notifying users that older chats will not update automatically unless manually refreshed.
This would help users manage instruction updates more effectively and avoid inconsistencies across chats.
Looking forward to your response!
Best regards,
Emerson
PS: This message was written with the assistance of ChatGPT after multiple failed attempts to update the project instructions across all chats within a project.
