ChatGPT Web Update Removed Message Version Arrows (Cannot Access Edited Message History)

Absolutely yeah. I mean if the really deleted that Feature and i lost all my stuff, thats reason enough for me to cancel my subscription and use other tools.

Yeah I spoke with them. I’m pretty sure it was just an ai bot messaging me. And it kept saying that there was never an official feature for viewing edit history

This is what they said to me:

“What you’re describing (toggling through prior versions of an edited message in regular chats on ChatGPT) isn’t a currently documented ChatGPT feature; the only documented “Version History” is for custom GPTs in the GPT editor (and “history” exists for saved memories, separately ).”

Absolute bs

Earlier the issue was basically: for **new regenerations** you don’t get the “1/2/3/4” response selector / navigator (the thing that lets you flip between regenerated variants). Annoying, but whatever.

But now it’s worse: it’s **retroactive**. Like… even chats that are **3–5 years old** (where the selector definitely existed before) have lost the option too. So the older regenerated variants I used to revisit are just not accessible anymore.

I’m a **Plus user**, and I’ve reported this multiple times. The response I got from the ChatGPT team was basically: **“expected behavior from Chrome.”** Which doesn’t make sense because:

* it’s happening across browsers/devices for a lot of people, and

* the retroactive part screams server/UI change, not a Chrome quirk.

**Why this is a real workflow killer (esp for writers / people iterating):**

* I used to regenerate, pick “Option 1”, and then build a whole thread referencing that (“go back to option 1 on this message and continue”).

* Now those internal references are broken because the selector is gone even in old chats.

* Export doesn’t help either — exports only include the **currently visible** assistant message, not the old regen variants.

**Workaround attempts I tried:**

* I checked from another account: I’m Plus on my main. I tested on a **free account too** → same problem there as well. So it’s not “Plus-only” or “billing-related”.

**Questions:**

1. Is this a bug or are they actually deprecating regen history / version navigation?

2. If it’s deprecation, why no warning? Retroactively removing access to old variants is brutal.

3. Has anyone found any reliable way to retrieve older regen variants (or confirm they’re still stored server-side)?

Yes—what’s missing on my end is exactly the **message version UI**: the **1/2, 2/2, 3/4-style** message count + **left/right arrows** (on both the **assistant responses** *and* my **prompt/user message** when it has edited history) that lets you navigate between regenerated versions and view **edited message history**. On your side you can see it; on my side it’s **not visible at all**. It’s also **not model-specific** — it happens on **all models**. And it’s not platform-specific either — I’m seeing it across **web** and the **desktop app** (and generally across devices), i.e., **all versions** on my end. It’s also **not browser-specific**, and the usual workarounds (log out/in, hard refresh, clear cache, etc.) aren’t fixing it for me. Also, this isn’t only affecting new/current messages — it’s retroactive too, missing even in older chats where the arrows/version count used to be available.

Issue has been present on my paid account for about two days now. I can confirm I can STILL see the arrows still on a free account.

I’m not really sure why it’s taking so long to get a response from Support, especially as multiple users have reported this issue.

The gall to insinuate that this wasn’t an official feature is distasteful.

If old responses are lost, that would honestly suck, but at this point I would rather have a concrete response from Support

I am also having the same issues. It’s very annoying, I went on other accounts just to check and some FREE accounts still have the feature! I’m a plus user and it’s GONE. I wish they’d take my account off the experimental stuff, I hate when things change without even a notification.

I’m seeing the same issue. I also noticed that my free account is still able to cycle through previous responses, but my subscription account is not… It’s been 2 days now

Just in case there’s any confusion about the missing functionality, here’s what it SHOULD look like and always HAS looked like until a few days ago:

Hello! I’m new to the message board. Greetings.

I have the same problem. I have a free account. A friend of mine with a Plus account don’t.
