ChatGPT Pro usage limits have dropped significantly

Over the past two weeks, ChatGPT Pro usage limits seem to have decreased significantly.

On August 5, I used my personal usage reset and then consumed 195.5 million tokens (5.6 Sol High - xHigh), based on the usage data shown in my ChatGPT account on August 6. According to the usage page, this represented 28% of my weekly allowance. Based on that figure, my total weekly limit would be approximately:

195.5M ÷ 0.28 ≈ 700 million tokens

For comparison, my colleague has a $100 Claude subscription and uses it for almost the same type of work. Based on our token-usage calculations, using only Opus 5 in xhigh mode, Claude currently appears to provide more than twice the usage capacity—approximately 1.5 billion tokens per seven-day period.

I understand that OpenAI and Anthropic may account for tokens differently, particularly when cache reads, cache writes, and output tokens are involved. Therefore, this may not be a perfect one-to-one comparison. However, the difference is still substantial.

I have also seen many recent posts from Pro users reporting that their available usage has dropped dramatically over the past two weeks. This suggests that the issue is not limited to my account and may reflect a broader reduction in Pro usage limits.

The ChatGPT interface and overall user experience are significantly better for me, and I would prefer to continue using it. However, if these limits remain unchanged, I will almost certainly switch to Claude when my current ChatGPT subscription ends later this month. At the same price point, the difference in available usage is becoming too large to justify staying.

Appendix: Previously, while using GPT-5.5 in xhigh mode, the limits were generous enough that some of the complimentary usage resets provided by OpenAI expired without me ever needing to use them. The contrast with the current limits is therefore especially noticeable.

I’ve been a paying ChatGPT user because, up until now, the service provided real value for the type of work I do. But these new usage restrictions are seriously making me reconsider continuing my subscription.

I don’t think it’s fair to pay for a service and then have to constantly watch a weekly percentage dropping simply because I’m using the product for the exact reason I subscribed to it — longer projects, troubleshooting, research, coding, document review, and ongoing conversations.

What makes it worse is that the experience was working well before these changes. Now I feel like I have to ration my conversations or worry about whether I’ll have enough usage left to finish something I already started. That completely changes the value of the subscription.

This is also a competitive market. There are other AI platforms offering increasingly capable models and generous usage options. Customers are going to compare what they’re paying against what they can actually use. If paying customers feel restricted to the point where they’re afraid to use the product, some of them are simply going to take their money somewhere else.

I’m one of those customers considering exactly that.

I like ChatGPT. I’ve built workflows around it, and I would rather continue using it. But loyalty only goes so far when the service I’m paying for becomes substantially more restrictive. If usage limits are necessary, they should at least be transparent, predictable, and reasonable enough that paying customers can actually complete substantial projects without suddenly watching their weekly allowance disappear.

The product was good enough to keep me here. Please don’t make the usage policy the reason I leave.

Exactly, I moved from Claude to ChatGPT only because of their reasonable token limits but all of a sudden they seem to have gotten somehow similar if not worse. I still preferred the better experience at Claude and now I’m considering to go back to Claude atleast their token usage makes sense… GPT decides to reset my weekly usage whenever they want which is good news but it doesn’t make any sense… the 5 hour limits run out in minutes on even medium effort Terra or Sol and then the confusing Weekly limit randomly shifts 2 days forward or randomly resets to 100%, keeping me completely uncertain about if i should keep using it for be efficient till the reset date.

Yes, I subscribed to the Plus service on August 24th. At that time, the same task only consumed 3 to 5 percent of the 5-hour quota each time. Now the consumption has increased to 12-15%. I’m not willing to upgrade to the pro version now.
