ChatGPT/Codex organization needs to be dramatically simplified.
I use ChatGPT and Codex across a Mac mini, MacBook Pro, and other devices for multiple ongoing software projects. Right now the organization becomes inconsistent across devices. Local Codex projects make sense on the Mac where the repository lives, but viewing those development threads from another device becomes messy. Pinning threads makes them easier to access but pulls them out of the project organization, while unpinning them makes them difficult to find elsewhere.
Projects should be the persistent cross-device organizational layer. A project such as DealerGain should appear as DealerGain everywhere and contain its ChatGPT conversations, Codex development threads, repository information, and relevant files. Pinning a conversation should not remove it from that hierarchy. Users should also be able to pin an entire project.
The different chat/mode choices should also be simplified. From a user’s perspective, there should essentially be two clear choices:
ChatGPT — conversations, research, planning, connected apps, everyday work, and general AI assistance.
Codex — software development, repositories, local/cloud development environments, coding tasks, and implementation.
Having ChatGPT Chat, Work, Codex Local, Codex Cloud, and other overlapping-looking entry points makes it unnecessarily difficult to know where a task belongs. Local vs. cloud execution can be an implementation option inside Codex, rather than feeling like another type of conversation the user has to manage.
The ideal hierarchy would be:
Project → ChatGPT chats + Codex threads + files/repositories
and that exact structure should remain consistent across every device.
The goal should be that I decide what project I’m working on and whether I’m talking to ChatGPT or asking Codex to build something. I shouldn’t have to understand several different ChatGPT execution modes just to decide where to start a conversation.
