hi, so im tryna write some stuff for a story and im using gpt 4o to generate scenes for me to use as a basic foundation for what im writing.
with shorter responses, the button is still there, with long responses (ones that aren’t scenes or whatever) the button is there, but whenever i try to generate a scene, it doesnt generate the response in chat but instead in some weird canvas thing. but then when i press generate in chat, it generates in chat but the regenerate button has disappeared. i usually generate multiple responses cause it usually isn’t good enough, but now i cant do that.
i cant even see if i using gpt 4o or 4o mini, and i hate 4o mini
i have a feeling this is deliberate
and im hoping i dont have to pay an unreasonable amount of money just to be able to use the regenerate response feature.
pls someone help me
Hi @crustiebag
Short Answer: Disable Canvas from custom instruction.
And please visit OpenAI | Canvas Help Page
Long answer:
As default ChatGPT’s tools Web Search, DALL·E, Code, and Canvas are enable in your chats.
When you ask a long text, it triggers Canvas to open it. And in Canvas there is no regenerate button, but you can regenerate in Canvas box, if you ask it, and using writing shortcuts menu.
If you don’t want to be opened Canvas itself, you should disable it on your settings.
1 - Click on your profile icon
2- Click on Settings
3- Click on Personalization
4- Click on Custom Instructions
5- Go down and toggle Enable for new chats
6- Enable or disable what you want / don’t want to use.
7- Save
In your case, you should not select Canvas.
If you want to use Canvas when it is disable, in your chat, just select it from the toolbox.
This is when we disable Canvas from custom instruction and canvas is not opened itself, you can see regenerate button and which model is used:
When you don’t deactivate Canvas from custom instruction, as you can see below Canvas will be opened itself, and you will not see regenerate button:
You can change style from writing shortcuts menu:
If you click on Answer in chat instead" after canvas has written some text , it will rewrite the text, but will not see the regenerate button.
omg thank u so much i will literally su- i mean respectfully thank you for helping me out
i’m having the same issue now, but this solution didn’t help. It is still gone for me.
I told chatgpt to stop writing in canvas, but it continued to keep that option while still writing in chat instead.
