Charges still accruing after canceling API plan + deleting all API keys (balance keeps going negative)

Hi everyone. I’m stuck with billing charges that keep accruing even though my API plan is canceled and all API keys are deleted.

Timeline

  • I canceled my API billing plan on Dec 12, 2025 (Billing Overview shows Canceled).

  • I deleted all API keys (and verified there are no active keys).

  • Despite that, my account balance keeps changing / going more negative after Dec 12.

Support chat told me: “No new charges should accrue after cancellation; anything after is only usage before cancellation.”

But the balance keeps updating as if new charges are still being applied.

What I need

  1. Stop any further charges (if anything is still being billed).

  2. Reset my balance to $0.00 by reversing/refunding/crediting any charges that were applied after cancellation.

  3. An itemized breakdown of what exactly is causing the post-cancellation balance changes (timestamps, endpoint/model, project/org, invoice IDs).

Checks I already did

  • Plan shows canceled.

  • All API keys deleted.

  • Reviewed Billing History / Usage but it’s still unclear why the balance continues to change after the cancellation date.

Question to the community

Has anyone seen delayed posting of usage / invoice finalization that keeps updating the balance for days after cancellation?

What else should I check (e.g., other org/projects, old keys somewhere, any recurring charges)?

If any OpenAI staff can help: I can provide screenshots of the cancellation status and the Billing History (with sensitive details removed).

Contacting support was the right thing to do. I assume you already removed your payment methods which is usually a rock solid way to prevent charges of any kind.

Yes, I already contacted support. My API billing plan is canceled as of Dec 12, 2025, and I also removed my payment methods (as a precaution) and deleted/revoked all API keys.

But the main issue is that spend keeps increasing even when usage is zero.

In the Usage dashboard for 12/14/25 – 12/22/25 (All projects) it shows:

  • Total spend: $319.40

  • Total requests: 0

  • Total tokens: 0

  • And at the bottom it says: “There is no usage data for this period and group.”

So there is no recorded API usage, yet there is a significant charge for that period.

Could you please advise:

  1. What could cause charges if not API usage? (delayed posting, adjustments, fixed/recurring charges, billing corrections, etc.)

  2. Where is the best place to verify all organizations/projects and check for any admin/service/legacy keys that might still exist in another org/project?

  3. What is the fastest way to get a truly itemized invoice/line-item breakdown (invoice line items) to understand what exactly makes up the $319.40?
