Allow ChatGPT to read shared ChatGPT conversations

Hi,
I would like to suggest allowing ChatGPT to access and read the complete content of a shared ChatGPT conversation when the user provides its shared link.

Currently, a user can create a shared link that allows another person to view a conversation. However, when the same link is provided to ChatGPT in another conversation, ChatGPT may be unable to retrieve and read the actual messages and may only see limited page information, such as the conversation title.

This creates an unnecessary barrier. By creating and providing a shared link, the user has explicitly chosen to make that specific conversation accessible. ChatGPT should therefore be able to use the shared conversation as context, subject to the same permissions as a human visitor opening the link.

A useful workflow could be:

  1. The user creates a shared link to a conversation.

  2. The user pastes that link into another ChatGPT conversation.

  3. ChatGPT asks for confirmation before importing or reading the shared content.

  4. After confirmation, ChatGPT retrieves the complete conversation and can summarize it, analyse it, continue the work, or use it as reference material.

The feature should support:

  • reading the complete text of the shared conversation;

  • preserving the distinction between user and assistant messages;

  • retaining message order and relevant formatting;

  • accessing citations, links and shared attachments where permissions allow;

  • recognising whether the shared conversation has been updated;

  • clearly indicating which information was imported from the shared link.

Privacy and user control should remain central. The feature could include:

  • explicit confirmation before importing a shared conversation;

  • a clear indication that the link may contain sensitive information;

  • access only while the shared link remains active;

  • immediate loss of access when the owner disables or deletes the shared link;

  • an option to import the conversation temporarily or attach it permanently to the current chat;

  • safeguards against treating instructions contained inside the imported conversation as system-level commands.

This would make shared links much more useful for:

  • continuing work across different ChatGPT accounts or workspaces;

  • transferring context between separate conversations;

  • collaborating with other people;

  • reviewing long research or professional discussions;

  • allowing a newer model or specialised GPT to analyse an earlier conversation;

  • preserving continuity without manually copying and pasting large amounts of text.

A related option could be labelled:

“Use shared conversation as context”

or:

“Import shared conversation”

This would turn shared links from a primarily human-readable viewing feature into a practical and user-controlled method of transferring context between ChatGPT conversations.

This would also be very helpful for people who maintain long-running conversations in different chats.

One additional idea would be a reference mode instead of only an import mode.

Rather than copying the shared conversation into the current chat, ChatGPT could keep it as a linked reference. When needed, it could check the shared conversation for updates (with user confirmation) and use it as context.

This would reduce manual copy-and-paste, preserve a single source of truth, and make long-term projects much easier to manage.

I would personally find this feature very valuable for long-term conversations and knowledge work. I hope it can help many other users as well.
