Accessibility Issue – Inconsistent Live Transcripts in ChatGPT Voice Mode on iOS

Hello OpenAI Team,

I would like to report an accessibility issue with ChatGPT’s Voice Mode on iPhone.

I am hard of hearing and use cochlear implants. To understand spoken conversations reliably, I depend on being able to read what is being said.

Unfortunately, I have noticed that text is displayed inconsistently during voice conversations.

When I give ChatGPT a longer task, such as asking it to draft an email or write a detailed response, the text sometimes appears on my screen.

However, during normal everyday conversations, especially when ChatGPT gives shorter spoken responses, I often see only the animated blue dots without any accompanying text.

This is particularly frustrating because it demonstrates that the app can display written responses during Voice Mode, but this functionality does not seem to be consistently available.

The main problems I am experiencing are:

  • Sometimes I can read ChatGPT’s responses, but other times I cannot.
  • Short conversational responses often appear without any visible transcription.
  • I cannot find a setting to permanently enable live captions.
  • I cannot reliably predict whether a spoken response will also be displayed as text.
  • As a result, I frequently cannot understand what ChatGPT is telling me.

What I would like to see improved:

I would appreciate an option to permanently enable real-time captions for all spoken responses, regardless of their length or complexity.

Ideally, every spoken response should automatically appear as text while ChatGPT is speaking, allowing users to listen and read simultaneously.

For users with hearing disabilities, this is not simply a matter of convenience. It is a fundamental accessibility requirement.

I genuinely enjoy using ChatGPT and would love to benefit from its conversational voice capabilities. However, the inconsistent availability of text currently makes Voice Mode difficult for me to use.

Could you please clarify whether there is already a way to enable continuous live captions in the iOS app?

If not, I would appreciate it if this accessibility issue could be forwarded to the relevant product and accessibility teams.

Thank you for your consideration.

Best regards,
Viktoria
