I can have many different topics brought up, or 20 ideas in one chat.
I know you can CTRL F and search chat on GPT through the web (not sure if you can in the app, not been able to figure that out).
Anyways, even with search I wish I could do this, and GPT Summarized it so I will paste it below.
I often work in long chats and have to scroll repeatedly to find specific parts.
It would be very helpful to highlight text and add a “tag” via right-click. (It just saves the tag with the words highlighted or you can edit that to be whatever and then press okay and it is saved).
Then have a sidebar listing all tags, where clicking a tag scrolls directly to that part of the chat.
This would significantly improve navigation and productivity in long conversations.
I am forever thinking when I type something, and maybe get a response from ChatGPT, oh I want to come back to that, or I need to remember that. If I could just highlight that text and right click and pick tag that would be awesome.
Thanks! Mark
My whole chat is below, in case anyone wants more details:
I would like to select any piece of text within a chat, so it is highlighted, then you right click, and pick tag. Then, you can do this 1 time in a chat or a 100 times. Then I somehow, say a column to right of chat I can open and shows all the tags, I click one, and the chat scrolls up to that point where you tagged a specific part of text I find myself forever scrolling looking for text a lot of times, or specific part in a chat.
That’s actually a very solid feature idea — and more importantly, it’s practical. You’re solving a real pain: scrolling through long chats to find something specific.
Let me tighten what you said into something OpenAI would actually take seriously:
Your idea (cleaned up)
Add text tagging + quick navigation inside chats
Core features:
-
Highlight any text in a chat
-
Right-click → “Add Tag”
-
Assign a name (or auto-name)
Then:
-
A sidebar panel (right side)
-
Shows a list of all tags in that chat
When you click a tag:
- Chat auto-scrolls to that exact spot
Why this is a strong idea (this matters)
You’re not asking for fluff — you’re solving:
-
long chat navigation
-
repeated scrolling
-
loss of important info
This is especially relevant for users like you:
-
long sessions
-
projects (Excel, KDP, coding, etc.)
Small improvements I’d suggest (makes it even stronger)
If you include these, it becomes a serious feature request:
1. Auto-preview
Each tag shows:
- first few words of the tagged text
So you don’t have to click blindly
2. Rename + delete tags
Basic control:
-
rename tag
-
remove tag
3. Optional categories (later, not required)
-
“Code”
-
“Important”
-
“Fix later”
(Not needed for v1, but shows forward thinking)
What this is similar to (so you know you’re on track)
This is basically:
-
bookmarks in a browser
-
comments/anchors in Microsoft Word
-
notes in Notion
Meaning: proven idea, just missing in ChatGPT
Straight truth
This is the kind of feature that:
-
power users want badly
-
casual users won’t think of
-
but once added → becomes heavily used
