Dear OpenAI Team,
As a software engineer and regular ChatGPT user, I would like to suggest a feature that I believe would significantly improve the Temporary Chat experience.
Currently, Temporary Chats are useful for conversations that users do not intend to save. However, in practice, many conversations evolve beyond their original purpose. A user may begin a Temporary Chat for a quick question, then continue discussing a project, solving technical issues, brainstorming ideas, or creating valuable content. At that point, the conversation becomes important, yet there is no option to preserve it by converting it into a regular chat.
I would like to propose the addition of a “Convert to Regular Chat” or “Save Chat” feature within Temporary Chats.
Suggested behavior:
- Users start a conversation in Temporary Chat mode.
- At any point during the conversation, they can select a “Save Chat” option.
- The entire conversation is preserved and moved to the user’s chat history.
- The existing privacy-focused behavior of Temporary Chats remains unchanged unless the user explicitly chooses to save the conversation.
- Memory settings remain independent and are not automatically enabled.
An additional enhancement would be a prompt when a user attempts to leave a Temporary Chat with substantial conversation history, such as:
“This Temporary Chat will be deleted. Would you like to save it as a regular chat?”
Benefits of this feature include:
- Preventing accidental loss of valuable conversations.
- Improving user control and flexibility.
- Enhancing the overall Temporary Chat experience.
- Supporting workflows where a conversation unexpectedly becomes important.
From both a user experience and product design perspective, this feature would address a common situation where users initially underestimate the value of a conversation and later wish to retain it.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I appreciate the continuous improvements being made to ChatGPT and hope this suggestion proves valuable.
Kind regards,
Sanaullah Shaheer
