4, 4o and o1 compressed files processing - zip, tar

Hello OpenAI team,

Please would you consider adding compressed files processing capability to 4, 4o and o1. It’s been a long time 4o can do such processing, I believe users would benefit from o1 being able to accept those as well.

Today only gpt 4o mini is accepting zip attachments. The 4o model gives this error:

I still haven’t received any files. Can you try uploading them once more? If there’s an issue, feel free to let me know and I can help troubleshoot!

Anyone else?

I’m experiencing the same issue. It seems that neither o1 nor o3 allows ZIP uploads, only 4o accepts them? Has anyone found a workaround?

Not yet. Thanks for chiming in!

O3 mini high can now receive zip files, but won’t send them back re-processed to the user with any requested changes, the way 4o old model version used to do so well… Anyway it’s nice to see some progress, thank you OpenAI devs :raised_hands:

At the moment, o1 still can’t see zip attachments though, I mean, user is allowed to upload the zip file and it will appear in the chat, but o1 says:

I don’t see the zip file attached. Could you please try uploading it again

Simple answer, produced by AI:

o1 isn’t getting code interpreter.

Send over whatever file you want – it can’t be processed by the AI writing code.

And then: you go to see which models can regenerate, all are greyed out except gpt-4o.

So further understanding for you: with o1: no dalle, no internet search, GPTs do not use it - and no code interpreter. No competent code-writing models to actually execute code.

Which is a choice by OpenAI, as o1 can run canvas, likewise a tool.

Running code there is inconsequential.

I miss o1 preview and the old 4o model on Chatgpt.

They were mutually complementary for me, as one could propose amazing solutions (o1 preview) while the old 4o could process very competently zip files and send them back seamlessly.

And currently it can’t.

To ensure everything goes smoothly, I will manually explain what each file might do, starting with extraction and analysis. However, I can’t currently extract files directly in this environment. :sob:

Currently can.

The ChatGPT gpt-4o is just quite dumb now at doing things correctly.
For example, even after hand-holding, output of zip file directories into a dataframe??

hey that’s awesome, I felt that too but haven’t tried that solution! thanks so much!

I noticed that, prior to the december updates at least, we wouldnt’ need to say more than 5 words to achieve the same result.

Will try that.

“The Python tool is currently unavailable, so I cannot process the file in that way. However, if you upload the file again, I can proceed to help you unpack, analyze, and provide the necessary directory listing and contents. Feel free to upload it anytime!”
