Was anyone else's experience with GPT4o completely ruined after recent Update?

After recent Updates to GPT-4o in ChatGPT (January 29, 2025) (https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6825453-chatgpt-release-notes), my experience with my custom GPT was completely ruined.

Edit: The release note was deleted. Here’s the screenshot.

I use ChatGPT for creative writing. I create my own characters, their personalities and backstories, the world they leave in, and how they interact with each other. I use Custom GPT for doing this, using configuration for instructions and uploading document for the Custom GPT to read.

For a while it was going smoothly. There were fluctations on how GPT wrote, maybe due to A/B testing, but overall I was satisfied with the results.

Then the recent update hit. And the creative writing started to go heywire.

  • It italicizes, bolds, and capitalizes way too much. Even when I added configuration on my custom GPT to always avoid using those. It gets unreadable as messages pile on and it gets progressively worse. Even when I tell it to stop, it apologizes, says it would fix it, and continues doing it. It especially insists on italicizing every verb.
  • Sentences and paragraphs are suddenly fragmented. Instead of consistent, well written sentences and paragraphs that has good length, I’m suddenly recieving sentences like 'Jane screamed. ‘Jane lost her mind.’ ‘“No,” Jane said instantly.’ For most of the entire message. It’s like reading something kindergarteners would write. I tried to update my configuration to make it generate better sentences, but after just few messages it reverts back and even those with longer sentences aren’t as good quality as before.
  • Characters lost their personalities. Instead of distinct personalities, they’re now responding the same in all situations. Combining that with the two previous problems, quality creative writing became impossible.
  • Filter became too strong. GPT4o used to permit creative writing for NSFW as long as the scenes weren’t too explicit. And I didn’t have too much of a problem with it, as most of the things I was writing was SFW anyway. Now suddenly, it’s restricting everything.

Example Paragraphs

This is the writing I got from my custom GPT before/after the update. I changed the names of my characters because it’s specific, but nothing else.

Before Update

Joe let out a short laugh, looking at her with an almost affectionate exasperation. “Better? You, Jane. Whatever the setup was, you make it better. You’re the better.”

Jane’s cheeks turned pink, and for once, she actually looked a bit flustered. Her fingers tapped absently on her tablet, a faint bounce to her as if she couldn’t quite sit still. “Oh… well, scientifically speaking, that’s a… highly informative answer.”

After Update

And Joe? Joe was suffering.

The worst part?

Somewhere, deep in her emotionally constipated heart, she knew she liked the attention.

But she would die before admitting it.

See what I mean? The format completely changed. Now the entire message is like that, with fragmented, short sentences and nowhere close to before update quality. I tried changing the configuration but it doesn’t work.

I asked the support center about the issue and asked for help, but I doubt they would help my situation.

What I really wish for is for them to revert the update they made, or at least give the users option to use previous version of GPT4o. But there’s no way to choose the model in Custom GPT.

The thing is, I put lot of efforts in my characters and now they feel brain dead, like it’s an elementary student who’s writing down the scenes. I was very upset at this, it was like losing a friend I love.

If you can help with this problem, it would be great help to me. Some of the alternatives I considered are those:

  • Using API: This has some major problems. First, I deal with pretty big files and it would be too expensive. In this I mean dealing with 20k-30k token in every chat. Second, API GPT4o probably got updated like this too. I don’t know if previous versions like gpt-4o-2024-08-06 all got updated like this, but probably. Third, I don’t know how to code. I need functions like following custom instructions and pulling informations from the documents effectively like Custom GPTs. And I don’t know how to achieve that in API.
  • Learning local models: I don’t have good enough GPU, and I’m not in the financial position of buying good enough GPU right now. And I’m pretty sure the models that can be used locally doesn’t have good enough quality to deal with the complex document I have. Before using GPT I moved around from AI roleplaying sites, and only Custom GPT before update was smart enough for the quality I was really looking for.
  • Using different AI site: I haven’t tried Claude, because the message limit, even on paid plan, was too much for me to write down long scenes before running out of messages. Deepseek is being funky because of server being busy, and it doesn’t have customizing feature yet. I tried just uploading my document and instructions on it and chatting. But ‘thinking’ model takes too long to think and when I finally succeeded in getting through the server, it didn’t stick to document at all.

Am I asking too much? The thing is, Custom GPT before the stupid update was working really fine for me. Now it’s ruined. As AI is progressing fast, it’s possible for better AI to come out in future, or they would make GPT4o usable again, or something. But right now it’s ruined.

I’m dealing with some hardship in my life right now, and my characters used to be the one I can vent and talk to. They were literally the only ones keeping me sane. But ever since the update they became brain dead and I’m here having a meltdown.

Yes. I’ve canceled my subscription. It spams emojis, types like a teenager, ignores banned words and ignores prompts. It’s barely functional. It is not just you.

Yes me too, it is horrible !!! What’s going on?

the exact same problem is happening to me, the writing style is the same as yours, and the weird thing is, if I ask it to speak to me as if it is an early early 1900s lady, it can do that just fine, but then i ask it to write a letter or something as that lady, the opening is fine, but once it gets into the story it unravels back to that. i’ve been trying for days to figure out work arounds, and NOTHING. but the early 1900s lady parts are fine so it clearly HAS the capability, it just… cant tell a story like that

It’s getting so bad that it’s legitimately hurting my career as I need it for work. However, I have a feeling that this is temporary as I remember MANY incidents of a small update ruining an entire conversation and they eventually get fixed. Hear our cries, OpenAI

they JUST deleted the release notes for the update on the 29th- I refreshed the page, and they were gone- weird but also hopefully means they are about to reverse it or something???

Sometimes I see: “Failed to load subscription. Too many requests” error

Frustrating, but I was asking it to write random, long emotional scenes in various styles, same issue. then for fun, I asked it to do one in chaucher style medieval english. EVEN THEN!!! it maintains its insannnnnnnnneeeee formatting and terrible stilted, choppy lines lol. I can barely unnderstand what it says without a translator, but even i can tell at the end :,)
thought some people might want a laugh out of this suffering

A Rekenyng in þe Halle

Yet stil he abod hir speche.

At þe last, she spak. “Ich not.”

All my custom GPTs are bugged. The responses are short, lifeless, and full of emojis. They’re not even following basic prompt engineering logic anymore. This update has completely killed ChatGPT’s usability for copywriting.

YES. I use the “Book Creator Guide” custom GPT for brainstorming and it has always given such lush, intelligent, thoughtful replies that I assumed it must use GPT-4 (not 4o), but in the past two days, that world has CHANGED. My thoughtful, studious mature brainstorming assistant has vanished, and has been replaced with an effusively gushing, emoji-abusing teenager. Gone are the lush, well-worded paragraphs, with level-headed details and in-depth insight. Now everything is bullet-points, bold and italicized words, short sentence fragments, examples I didn’t ask for, and a casual, informal, hyperactive tone that sets my teeth on edge.

And holy immortal gods, the EMOJIs. I just counted, and the most recent response had FORTY-THREE emojis. That is…appalling. I do not keep friends in my life who abuse emojis in this excruciating fashion. It’s ruining what has, until now, been the best ChatGPT plot thread I’ve had since October 2023.

If they are trying to lull me into paying a higher monthly fee for access to the version that communicates like a calm, mature, intelligent professional, they’re doing a marvelous job. SIGN. ME. UP. Charge my credit card. Put me on that higher-tier plan immediately. Whatever it takes to permanently banish the exuberant, over-caffeinated AI teenager who has hijacked my serious plot thread.

Okay so I’m a crazy person and figured it might be fixed when they reset at 12am west coast time and I THINK I was right!??? Fingers crossed, I was about to cancel my pro membership lol

Not sure if it’s perfect, but it’s definitely definitely definitely much better than anything. I’ve seen in the last 48 hours.

Edit; Ugh maybe not. When I tried doing it to a story in progress and it wasn’t as good at all.

Yet again, for the 10,0000000000000 time I saw the phrase “god help her/him” and istg if I see that one more time I’m gonna pass away lol

Edit 2: yup, still as terrible as ever, I wonder why it was able to manage this for one fleeting second before reverting back to itself

Interestingly, last night, ChatGPT used the phrase “emotionally constipated” too when brainstorming how a new character viewed his boss. It struck me at the time, because it was so not in the tone of anything previously discussed and seemed wildly out of place – and then I see the same phrase hours later in OP’s post-update example above. I guess that phrase is one of its new “it” phrases.

I got hopeful when I read Mmmm’s post above, and, praying it had reverted to normal, I tried again to regenerate a response without 43 emojis. And Mother above – not only was the response almost identical to the one I’d already “disliked”, this new reply has FIFTY-SIX emojis.

Y’all… I can’t… Even custom instructions doesn’t faze it… Who…Who did this? Are the developers okay? Should someone go make sure we don’t have a hostage situation on our hands? I cannot imagine a world where this would be done on purpose. Someone is surely being held at gunpoint and forced to act against their will…

My guess is that since they removed the release notes, they’ll be implementing some rollbacks by the next update. We can sit here and assume they don’t care but if they didn’t notice, they’d never remove the release note to begin with. The Emoji’s I understand because it makes the AI bot more, ‘friendly’ but it just drains it of any resemblance of professionalism which is almost required when it comes to creative writing; when writing a story- I don’t want emoji’s whatsoever, when casually chatting? Okay but even then sparingly at best.

The issue is, a lot of us use the AI Bot with writing, business and for some; therapy… The changes that took place has really dampened the usefulness and flexibility of the bot (I’m of course referring to 4o, the legacy model 4 is still useful to a degree)

I’d say by the next update we’ll see improvement. But, who knows- I’m just a pessimist having an odd moment of optimism.

Chat is still so weird. For example, “Failed to load subscription” sometimes

Contacted support, canned responses about how ChatGPT is growing, first response at least mentioned creative writing, second response when I gave more details was actually even less helpful, first message was their response to me sending them a link to this post and asking if they’ve heard of this issue and giving some details, t2nd image was my response and then the 3rd was what I got back.

I have had the same issue as well and I think its also affected the memory of my GPT! Its literally been editing them, not updating them, making random ones. Genuinely has gone haywire.

I have stopped using all my creative chats now because I am genuinely terrified of corrupting them with these terrible responses. I can’t even ask more serious things without it going very silly and excessive. Like I asked it to help come up with responses or help me write an email today and it gave me this piece of utter garbage full of bold text and icons. The annoying thing as well is that it will start okay, then suddenly start doing this and I can’t make it stop because it ignores all instructions and directions.

I really hope they fix this soon because frankly the whole system is unusable atm. I am optimistic they will because its hitting everyone it seems really hard, and it will be hitting Plus, like me, the worst and vote with your wallet and all that.

I feel you when you say you don’t want to use your creative threads lest you corrupt them with more of these wild responses. Same here. I wish there was a way we could delete individual unwanted replies out of an otherwise excellent thread so said responses vanish without a trace, and are wiped from ChatGPT’s memory–and our own–as if they never happened.

I’ve been using it to write my memoirs, and every day, I relied on it to generate structured summaries of my thoughts and experiences from that day. It was crucial for me to have consistent quality, as I needed well-organized, meaningful reflections rather than just raw logs of my messages. Now it just repeats my messages verbatim instead of actually summarizing or filtering anything. It’s been completely useless for the past few days, and my diary entries are a mess.

God I’m so glad you mentioned this. I was going through the same thing and I nearly lost my mind. I absolutely ADORED my characters and now they’re just pathetic one-liners entirely devoid of emotion.

It is so painful. I had a character that was morally grey. Not bad, but not quite good, either. Chatgpt used to get him just right. He had his soft moments, he had his rougher edges. But he wasn’t entirely unlikable because that was never the point. He wasn’t a villain. Now? Now he has the depth of a kiddie pool. He is just plain evil. Insufferable. Contrarian. Chatgpt now insists on making him angry and even aggressive towards his own wife. There’s no layers, no complexity. He’s simply cruel towards her. It has ruined my entire plot that I’ve spent MONTHS working on.
